TheAlmightyOS
There IS a mod out there for this (sort of), however it has not been updated since 2011, does not have support for any weapons from DLC's and (IMHO) was done very poorly. I suggest removing the Ammo Backpacks that are equipped with most heavy weapons (and a couple of others e.g. Shishkebab). I like the idea of having the backpacks for these types of weapons, it is more realistic. However, NONE of the weapons reload as if they are attached to a massive pack on you back. In fact, WHY DO THESE WEAPONS RELOAD AT ALL?! Case in point, the Mini-gun. So, we got this huge ammo black hole connected to, what should be, a small ammo supply depot on your back. So, why do you reload by removing and replacing a cartridge on the side of the weapon?! At that point the backpack is only a useless decoration. And only 240 5mm bullets?! Let's do a little fuzzy math here: I am guestimating the backpack to be 2'x3'x1' or 10368 cubic inches of space, to store the bullets. A 5mm bullet is of course 5mm wide. There are various types of of 5mm ammunition, however goolge tells me the the most common is 33mm in length. Let's convert that from metric (0.19x1.23) and then using the formula for volume of a cylinder we find that a single 5mm bullet takes up, roughly, 0.035 cubic inches of space. So how many bullets could we cram in that backpack? 10368 / 0.035 = 296228 BULLETS! If you decided you wanted to just completely unload your minigun with a full backpack of bullets (this is assuming you are not on hardcore and have just crushed yourself trying to put on a 2.5 TON backpack) It would take you approximately 4 HOURS before you finally ran out. And if you were using standard ammo the gun would have broke after ~6000 rounds. Why am I quoting these ridiculous numbers? Because I want it to sink in that these ammo packs truely serve no purpose other then to look bulky on your back It's not just the mini-gun ether. We are talking Gatling Lasers, Grenade Machine Guns, The K9000 cyberdog, Ark Welders and the flamer. They are useless and should be removed. UNLESS......We make them serve a purpose! Lets take the minigun again for an example. What if we connect the backpack to the gun so it looks like the minigun is feeding from the backpack, disable the reload animation, change the clip size to 2400 (because, come on, 296228 is just a tad too much) and lengthen the reload time from 4 seconds to 20. NOW the backpack looks like it does something! The same could be done with any of the Weapons that have backpacks: Remove the animation (or create a new one), Set the clip size to 10x the original and make the reload 5x the original. As for ballance, yes, you could mow down quite a few deathclaws in quary junction before needing to reload. However, if that father deathclaw ain't dead yet when you start reloading... you're !@#$ed. What do you guys think? Yay, Nay, I am crazy? Post and let me know! Edited April 30, 2014 by TheAlmightyOS
dangman4ever
IIRC, there's an upper limit to how much ammo a weapon can hold in the magazine in the Gamebyro engine. I think the minigun's 200+ rounds is near that limit.
MarchUntoTorment
Hmmm... I do like this idea. Perhaps we adopt the Flamer's reload animation so that every 240 rounds, the ammunition belt into the minigun is adjusted a tiny bit? I am very taken with this idea. TheAlmightyOS
IIRC, there's an upper limit to how much ammo a weapon can hold in the magazine in the Gamebyro engine. I think the minigun's 200+ rounds is near that limit. Hum, I would like to test that out. I tried to find that upper limit documented somewhere but Google failed me again. Might do some testing within the G.E.C.K. to see what I can come up with. Not great at modding, but I know enough about gamebyro to get myself in trouble  Hmmm... I do like this idea. Perhaps we adopt the Flamer's reload animation so that every 240 rounds, the ammunition belt into the minigun is adjusted a tiny bit? I am very taken with this idea. That is an idea. Have the player remove and reattach the ammo belt to the minigun during the reloading animation. The ammo space of the backpack would still be a long ways from realistic, but at least it would look like the backpack did something. We could do something along those lines with the Gatling laser. For that one we would not have to change the animation at all, just replace the ECP with a cord that the player plugs and unplugs from the side. Hell, we could use that very same animation for the minigun only replace the cord with an ammo-belt. Edited May 1, 2014 by TheAlmightyOS

TheAlmightyOS
And I just thought of something for the Shishkebab. I know I saw SOMEWHERE a re-texture of the 'bab with the backpack removed and a flamer fuel tank added under the grip. If I could find who made that re-texture and ask for permission to use it and then make the 'bab so it uses flamer fuel while in the ready position that would kill two birds with one stone: A backpack is removed and a stupidly OP weapon is more realistic
irswat
What's stopping you from getting it done yourself?
TheAlmightyOS
What's stopping you from getting it done yourself? I am absolutely terrible with the G.E.C.K.. I am no modder.I can change some values here and there, yes. But removing the pack or adding the ammobelt... I would not even know where to start. So I am pitching the idea to the real modders here and see if they want to pick it up
