If you play a Argonian you get water breathing for free.

Other than that you need a water breathing spell or item.

A quick way to get the spell is train alteration up a little and visit the discount spell shop in the Imperial City.

Or do the mages guild recommendation for Cheydinhal. The mages guild one is technically a better version since it comes with feather.

Alchemy is another option, there are some normal potions which give water breathing, and it isn't hard to find ingredients that have that effect.

The other alternative is to get atleast level 7, and hope for an enchanted item.

In OOO, there's a cave south of the big bridge crossing the lake, filled with bandits, which has a constant effect water breathing amulet. Can't remember which cave right now, but I know it's on the East shore of the lake, most likely south of the bridge.

Don't know if it's in Vanilla. Probably not since I was level 1 when I found it.

Doing one of the quests <SPOILER>

from one of the residents living in a community by Lake Rumare, will give you a ring which grants water breathing as a reward.

<END SPOILER>

You can also find potions and scrolls that will grant both water walking and underwater breathing. Using one of the methods detailed in this thread will give you the ability, so it's really not that hard to accomplish.

If your character is strong enough you can swim with your head out of the water OR you can swim underwater until you see your breath-o-meter down too low and then raise above water for air. I have potions, scrolls, jewelry and the spell for water breathing and walking, but rarely use them unless I'm going to swim really far and don't want to fool with watching my air indicator. If it gets too low, you will drown, die and have to load a previous save.

As with anything that might cause harm or death, remember to hit F5 often! A save, saves- yanno?!

Since you asked for cheats, here's a doozy:

-Find and buy the spells of water breathing and soul trap.

-Use "player.additem 192 1" in the console to get a black soul gem.

-Soultrap somebody into the gem.

-Use that powerful soul to enchant something with water breathing as a "constant effect."

Or I guess you could just give yourself 11 rumare slaughterfish scales, and go to Weye for the "go fish" quest, and then add the 12th scale to finish the quest to get the ring called "Jewel of the Rumare" which grants water breathing. DON'T try to skip a step and just add 12 scales in the first place! That will wreck the quest.

The Endurance increase the breath

With Endurance 100 and more you can swim underwater for a longer time

If you want, in the CS you can edit these settings:

FActorSwimBreathBase

(Default 4.000)

FActorSwimBreathMult

(Default 3.000)

Total Breath = FActorSwimBreathBase + (FActorSwimBreathMult X Endurance)

By increasing these values, you can increase the total breath.

*FActorSwimBreathDamage

(Default 0.200)

This is the damage you take when your breath-o-meter is empty

If you decrease this value you can survive longer

Opening the console ~ and typing "tgm" (minus parentheses) gives you godmode, and also allows you to hold your breath infinitely underwater. It's the easiest way to get the ability without mods or a lot of searching.

Cheating and going through the hassle of a higher level soulgem doesn't provide any benefit over a petty soulgem in this case since magnitude is not used for waterbreating.

If you already have the spell, you don't really need the enchantment, most swimming areas don't require you to stay down longer than a single cast, and even then, as long as waterbreathing is affecting you, you will regain breath underwater so even a small duration will refill your gauge so that you can continue without it.

I don't mind at all Bben. In fact thank you. I sat here trying to figure out how to do it. I was thinking I'd need to shade the text or something like in Word, but didn't see or recognize that function selection. Now I know how to do it, so thanks again!
