It prevents memory related crashes and infinite loading screens. The patch is included in skse 1.7 alpha as long as you set the correct values in the skse.ini file. If you don't have skse 1.7 alpha then you should install ssme and make the recommended tweaks to the skse.ini. At least, that was the case last time I checked.
