Matoyak
Ok, so in order to update a save file with Wrye Bash, it is suggested to use the Console to go to a certain location and wait 4 days (so that all cells and leveled lists are updated...or something like that) I understand the procedure, the only issue is...the tilde key does not bring up the console. I push it and nothing happens. I use Windows 7, have Oblivion GotY edition, with FCOM, Deadly Reflexes, Race Balancing Project, and Streamline. It works quite well, excepting the fact my Laptop's graphics card is terrible and a few "Oblivion has stopped responding" issues. What I'm saying is that I am reasonably sure that it isn't a mod issue, and that chances are I just have somehow disabled the console from being usable...or something. I have not edited any .ini files, and have not messed with any of Oblivions file folders other than the meshes and textures folders. I do not have it installed under program files because that one WinVista and Win7 causes quite a few issues. I use Wrye Bash with OBSE to launch my game, and I use OBMM to add OMOD files. I have no idea why the console does not work... Help please? Thankee in advance!
Matoyak
Well, having looked through the TESwiki a bit more, I have come across something that states that WinVista can cause this to not work and that I would need a mod named "Ring of Console" to get this to work... I guess my question now is: Is this also an issue with Windows 7? If so, will Ring of Console help? I am hesitant to install new mods willy-nilly... Also, I would need to rebuild my Bashed Patch, correct? Applying the Bashed Patch to Wrye Bash requires using the console to teleport to the test area and wait 4 days...so is this some kind of circular reasoning test? o_O ? EDIT: Ack! Sorry about the double-post guys...I can't seem to delete this second one and simply edit-add this to the first post... apologies! :(
Nimboss
Matoyak, The problem is you're on a laptop, I got this some weeks ago, and was puzzled. The reason is on laptops they have mapped the tilde key to IR communication something and the solution for that was to change the keyboard type in hardware to something else than the special laptop key setup. This might need some experiments depending on the brand of laptop I think I lost some other characters not responding on the right key but at least console key now works :) If you Google on "tilde laptop console not working" or similar you get a bunch of tips how to fix it. The other way is like you said to download a mod that move the console key somewhere else.
bben46
For some reason beyond my comprehension, Microsoft decided to disable the tilde key (~) when they have infrared turned on. On most desktop computers this is not a problem because they don't have IR capability. However, for laptops and media center desktops, as well as those desktops that do have an infrared receiver/transmitter it is a nuisance. On the media center PC, the simplest fix is to unplug the IR from the PC. The tilde immediately returns to use. On those with an IR that can not be simply unplugged, you will need to go into the control panel to disable IR. On an XP system: Vista will be similarStart>Settings>Control Panelclick on 'System' then the Hardware tab, then the 'Device Manager' Find the infrared portUnder the section labeled 'Device usage' select 'Do not use this Device (disable)'Click on the OK below it. A red x should appear over the IR port on the list of devices. Of course, this will make anything that relies on the IR no longer function until you change it back. Or, you can use this mod as a work around: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13133
Qwaxalot
Console issue (Tilde key, printscreen etc.) The console key is used to access in-game debugging commands. As such, it can be a powerful tool for analyzing game issues and also to cheat. The key is the top left key, directly under the "Esc" key and to the left of the "1" key (the "~" key on most keyboards). For the console feature to work, the line "ballowconsole=1" must be present in the interface section of your Oblivion.ini file (typically located in "...\Documents\mygames\oblivion\"). With conventional "PS-2", 101/102 Key keyboard and drivers, this key is mapped correctly. Unfortunately on many, USB interfaced, multi-media keyboards and international keyboards this key may not be in the same location. This is a function of window's plug 'n play feature. Vista also has 'special' keyboard drivers for multi-media keyboards that remap the tilde key and Print Screen keys, in which case Oblivion's console access and screencapture functions are defeated. To fix this issue: 1. Switch to a conventional "PS-2", 101/102 Key keyboard and drivers. It all depends on what features are most important to you.2. Use the "Ring Of Console" Mod (requires OBSE): http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=131333. Use the Change Console Key Mod (requires OBSE): http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=20446 In addition if you have a newer system with the Microsoft eHome devices, or an infrared remote for media versions of windows, Oblivion will not be able to read the scan code for the tilde key. This problem appears to be caused by the MIRC (Microsoft Infrared Remote Control). To fix this issue: 1. If the MIRC is connected via USB, disconnecting it should work. 2. If the Infrared device is built in to your computer (ie. laptops), you can disable the device with windows device manager (you will need to reenable it if you wish to use it when not gaming). 3. You can uninstall the device. Windows will reinstall it at the next bootup (not a very good long term solution because the device reinstallation will eventually bork). 4. If you don't care about the Infrared device at all, uninstall it with device manager, reboot, hold down the F8 key, and then turn off the device itself in your BIOS (if you don't turn the device off, Windows will reinstall the driver at it's next boot up) NOTE: The location of the device driver (in the Device Manager menu tree) will either be in the section "Universal Serial Bus controllers" or " Human Interface Devices". If under "Human Interface Devices" and you have the Microsoft eHome Infrared transceiver, the device to disable is "SMSC CIR Receiver" SIDE ISSUE: Cannot see the console (It seems to be shifted to the left). Caused by using "square" resolutions as opposed to widescreen.Solution: In the .ini file set "iConsoleTextXPos=30" to something like "iConsoleTextXPos=230" This article is a condensation of information from many sources, all in the public domain, my only contribution is to consolidate things in such a way as to, hopefully, make a useful guide for a user experiencing difficulties. For Reference: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Console_Command_Tutorial http://www.katsbits.com/htm/google_faq.php...mp;ucat=12& http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Console http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927824/en http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums/index.ph...&hl=console Bethesda Softworks Technical Support: "If you have a new system with the Microsoft eHome devices, these will conflict with the program being able to read the scan code for the tilde key from the keyboard. Those Microsoft eHome devices or drivers need to be disabled in order to allow the game to "see" the tilde key being pressed. The MIRC (Microsoft Infrared Remote Control) seems to disable the tilde (~) key in both Oblivion and Morrowind. Simply disconnecting the MIRC from the USB port will fix this issue." Matoyak
Thank y'all all for your help...I ended up going the easier less-likely-to-screw-with-my-computer path and just installed the ring of console plugin. Thanks for making the decision easy :D
