OBSE causes CTD

Hello,

For some reason, I am experiencing a crash to desktop, due to OBSE. Even after disabling all mods and running OBSE, I get the CTD. If I run the game with the original Oblivion.exe (not use OBSE) the CTD does not occur.

The CTD occurs when an enemy launches a spell at my character. In normal Oblivion, the spell is whitish-blue and no CTD. While using OBSE (both without any mods enabled at all, or some running) the spell is red and when it strikes my character, I get a CTD.

The last time this happened, I had to completely reinstall *everything* and I mean manually delete all file folders after uninstalling. Then reinstall form the CD, patch it and then reinstall each mod one-by-one. An ALL DAY affair.

So Im hoping this issue has been seen before and resolved. All versions of everything I use are up-to-date, including OBSE (stable ver 17).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

thank you,

-Jason

Next time take a back up of your Data folder after installing all official patches but before installing any mods. It should save you some time. I also recommend using/making .omod versions of mods as they are easier to uninstall/re-install (technically deactivate/reactivate).

This is going to be a mod. Whatever the crash, it is some mod that has some feature that is only active when using OBSE. Just disabling the mods only prevents the esp from starting. The meshes, textures & other files are still loaded. Using OMODs allow completely removing a mod and doesn't leave anything behind. If you can find the mod that changes the color of the magic to red that is a likely culprit.

Both are very good points! Thanks kindly. I will look around a bit. But I think I have a good idea now. I did just install Midas Magic not too long ago, though never activated it. That is probably what caused the issue.

Is it difficult to compile an OMOD? Where are the directions for doing that? Sorry, I have never done that before.

thanks again for your help guys!

It's really easy for "one configuration only" mods. It is not so easy* for mods that have several options that are implemented by copying different files around manually. (ick).

To see what I mean, compare Robert's female bodies compendium to Robert's Male Body v5 Beta.

Basically

1. Download mod

2. Extract files from mod

3. Start Oblivion Mod Manager

4. Click 'Create'

5. Click 'Add folder'

6. Select a folder where you've extracted the mod.

(Finding the right folder to select: If there is a 'Data' folder select that. If there are 'meshes / textures' folders select the folder that contains them. If there is a .esp file select the folder that contains it.)

7. At the least set the mod name in the omod creator dialog correctly. I go the full hog and put in source url, author and version number.

8. Click 'Create omod'

* Quite difficult.

P.S. Proper handling of multiple install option mods involves use of scripts. I would welcome volunteers to 'scriptify' the omod conversion data for mods in my 'first twenty' list. :whistling:
