The Master Of Zooz

"In our travels, we have heard of Gribka and Ishrat. I was wondering what you could tell us of them. I understand he is a bit of an antiques dealer. Would he have anything from earlier periods of Zooz?" T'skar asks the man behind the desk.

The man laughs. "Who can say what Ishrat has? After every flood he scavenges the local area and in the sewers to pick up what he can that somehow was not protected during the flood. He's been doing it for years as did his family before him. He keeps everything. After a flood everyone will go to see if he has anything of theirs. He sells it on for a pittance. After six months he sells whatever he has left to anyone who wants it. Whatever is left simply remains in his basements. He has several all absolutely full of junk = pots with holes in, broken fences, torn clothes. I think Gribka was trying to make some sort of catalogue for him."

"We all have special rooms below ground that can be sealed tight. We are careful to make sure eveything important fits in. But there are always a few things that won't, people who are away, visitors who don't know what to do. So Ishrat collects a lot initially. But it's been seven years since the last flood. He'll only have the rubbish left."

"No. Her family moved to Pellaret and they couldn't find her when they left. She hated school and so hid in Ishrat's basement. No one knew she was there until they'd gone. They had nine other children to feed so I think they didn't look as hard as they might have done. But Gribka's as happy as a desert rat in a sand pit. She's a bright girl but her spelling leaves a lot to be desired."

"Well, thank you very much for the information." T'skar looks to see if the others are ready to go. "Oh, maybe one more question. What can you tell us of this sword maker advertised here? Is he as good as the Master of Zooz was? Do you think he's ever seen one of the Zooz originals?"

"I can't help you with that. He makes the practise swords used by the trainers and their students, that is all I know. There are several of the master's swords in museums and articles with detailed drawings, it wouldn't be difficult for him to make one that looks the same I am sure. But from what I understand there is something special about the master's swords no one has ever been able to recreate since. Talk to one of the trainers or the smith himself if you need to know more."

"Oh. Well, thank you for your time." Turning to the rest of the group T'skar inquires, "Are we ready?" She then turns and heads for the door, looking for directions to one of the trainers in her pamphlet.

Zooz is constructed on a basic grid pattern. Currently you are on the north side of the main square, in the centre of the city. Your lodging is on the south side of the square. Ishrat is at the northern edge of town. The swordsmith is to the north west some way from the centre. Both trainers are close together, though not immediately adjacent, to the east about half way between the centre and the edge of town. The Zooz landing is to the east of the town. Other points referred to shown on the city map are the temple on the west side of the main square and the pumping station to south east.

Whilst it is possible to walk eveywhere Zooz has 1 million inhabitants and so covers a large area. Small horse-drawn chaises are available around the square but only take two people each.

As you all stand there in silence, thinking - whatever - you notice a very stange looking child crossing the park. He is male about fourteen years old. He is tall and thin but muscular with a narrow head. His auburn hair sticks up in spikes all over his scalp, rather as if a doll maker was in the process of glueing it in place. His complexion is pale brown, his eyes dark and his lips startlingly pink.

However it is his costume that makes you look twice. He wears a thin red vest that shimmers as he walks and scarlet shorts cut off at groin level. They seem to be wet but are in fact only shiny. His calf length boots are russet coloured and resemble those an old jester might have worn. He carries a small pack on his back.

He shows no interest in you.
