The Master Of Zooz

Druce looks at the woman, contemplating her words. After he's done mulling it over, he decides to finally speak. "Yes," he says. "I agree with Mac. It seems as if he's really lonely... is there another reason you're not telling us why he doesn't hang out with other children?" Druce asks, choosing his words carefully. "Not to be intrusive or anything," he adds at the end. "You have already been gracious enough to let us into your home."

Damiel sighs "The villagers believe that anyone who lives here is some form of undead. Probably because to them we appear immortal. They attack anyone who leaves here, even poor little Auriel whose only wish is to be friends with people. I sometimes wish we had the power to translocate and just be somewhere else with him. But such magics do not come within the knowledge of Auran or myself. And we are not immortal, just extraordinarily long-lived as all true wizards. Auriel hopes secretly to find a way out of here. He believes there will be something in the lower tunnels. When I first came I explored them all, all thirty five levels of them. There is nothing. Why was such a place constructed? I can only assume that long ago it was a prison, perhaps a jail for a whole society. There is that aura of misery about it that makes me shudder every time I have to go there. And yet there is nothing at all in the place, not even a ghost."

She brushes her hands against her robe. "If there is more you would know I will try to answer, or perhaps you would like to talk to Auran. He seems stern but has a heart of gold. I can take you to him if you like."

Auran's laboratory is in the basement of the tower. It is not linked to the tunnels below and is accessible only by stairs down from the ground floor of the tower. The tower has no external entrance at ground level and is reached through the manor house. Damiel takes you to the door but does not go in. She seems unhappy at the thought of going inside. Within Auran is sitting at a desk reading. Several tomes are open on the desk in front of him. Glancing around you can see the paraphernalia of research; bunsen burners, retorts, tubes, vials, pipettes and shelves of ingredients. There is no evidence of any experiment being operative just then.

As you go across to Auran you can see the books are all about reversing or undoing spell effects.

He peers at the pair who approach him.

"Yes?"

"We would like to have a word with you if you are available..." says Mac, glancing around, trying to figure out what exactly is going on in there...

"We would like to know more about you and your son... He is an intriguing fellow, with his ability... By the way, I dont want to meddle but what are you researching in here?"

"Yes," Druce agrees. "You have quite an interesting lab here... We would also like to know what you think of Auriel and the other children." he continues.

(OOC-> I just got the stitches in my mouth taken out, so I should be back to normal soon. The dentist could have been a bit more gentle though... :glare:

Auran frowns. "Auriel is just a boy. His healing ability was born with him, I assume inherited from my wife and myself although in fact individually our skills are different. Since he wandered in here when I was out of the room and drank a potion at the age of seven, a couple of thousand years ago, he has never changed. So he is a very old seven-year-old. His mind is of a seven-year-old too. It is lonely for him here so he invents imaginary playmates. I don't know of any other children you could mean unless those."

He glances wearily around the lab.

"I used to research the creation of life. Like any scientist I sought to create the perfect. In my case I wanted the perfrct being that would never age, sicken or die. As my wife has no doubt told you, nothing that is essentially human can be immortal but they can be almost so. I have, in my time, found ways of making those who do not age, those who are almost immortal and those who cannot be ill. I have never succeeded in combining all three traits."

He seems for a moment lost in his thoughts.

"But that is all in the past. All I seek to do now is to find a way to reverse the result of an 'accident' that occurred years ago. It is not however a subject I will talk more about."

He then takes you on a guided tour of the laboratory. It is not particularly exciting. He is amiable enough and will answer any further questions you may have except those about his current project.

OOC> Any further questions of Auran or Auriel? If not I will make the next move.
