The Master Of Zooz

Mmm Gnaag’s Idea seems good and sound. So let’s advertise by sending Zarim Bembolia a letter requesting an audience.

After that we can cross to the other side, go to the post office, then see where we go from there.

If all else fails, we can head south and see what’s down in Malibar, as that’s the only thing near to here.

Meanwhile, Kalmer steps outside and attracts the attention of one of the night porters. "Forgive my interruption of your duties, young man, but my companions and I are interested not only in Golconar itself, but also in its environs - things to do, places to see and so forth. We wondered whether you may be able to point out anything of interest that is not on this map?" He pulls out the Bashkher map from his inner pocket, and shows it to the porter, with raised eyebrows in an inquisitive manner.

(ooc, if the porter comes up with anything interesting, Kalmer asks him to mark it on the map, and hands him a few Nipin by way of thanks. If not, he gives him one Nipin for his trouble, and heads downstairs to see what the 'minders' are up to........)

The room is surprisingly busy. It seems as if the people at the festival did not eat or drink. A small knot of Diamond dwellers join in the conversation.

The general gist of it is that the slums are extensive but have no name.

"There really isn't anywhere else because although the desert does not reach the sea as in Dohoti it does get close to our hinterland. The poor fools who hear Golconar has streets paved with gold trek across it and those who make it are usually starving. It is why every member of the Diamond, including our governor, spends three months in the slums helping out."

Another diner points out that there used to be a settlement at Malibar and a few brave souls might live there as the little engine still does the trip once a day.

"The dead don't get up and walk around, Naissa. That is superstitious nonsense. And of course people live there. I was there only two months ago and there is a village of about 100 plus a couple of isolated farms. I'm sure someone started those rumours deliberately to stop the place being developed. It's higher up than here and much cooler. What better way to keep it small and select!"

Suddenly everything starts to make sense.

OOC> I hope.

ooc> this is assuming that Kalmer returns to the room and discloses what he has discovered

in context>

T’skar looks at the rest of the group. “Well, it looks like we have all come to the same conclusion,” she says, “But noone seems to want to voice it, so I will. Zarim Bembolia is an anagram of Malibar zombie, so it looks like we need to head to the Malibar hills, whether we find a zombie or not is another story, but it would explain 300 years of letters.” Looking at each of the group again she says “I am very certain that we don’t want company on this trip, though. Who knows what Ayala’s spies might do if they knew we were looking for an undead?” A pensive look crosses her face “How are the rest of you with it? I had to dissect brains in my study for the mind, so really am not squeamish with bodies, alive or dead, but I’m not so sure I want to meet one that was dead and is now alive. I’m not so sure what my reaction would be.”

Gnaag looked over T'skar face. Gnaag himself didn't found out anything like Malibar zombie. He was impressed by her intelligence.

"As I chose you T'skar as my master. I am going to do what you do. My steps will go where yours. I think I should learn something new. I am full of expectation. Maybe visiting of rotting zombie is good way to do it."

The rest of the night passes peacefully and you take the ferry to the other side without a problem. The minders do not follow you nor can you see any obvious replacements when you arrive.

(OOC should you wish to visit Ayala's glass factory or speak to her again you can do so before getting the boat to wherever you choose to go next)

The waterfront of the main city is very like the Diamond, all grand buildings of white marble but it is pretty much a facade for the standard Bashkheri city behind. It is much livelier than the Diamond with a whole string of places to eat lining the waterfront each setting out its tables beneath different coloured umbrellas. From a distance they are like a forest of giant multicoloured mushrooms.

There are rudimentary maps available that show significant buildings: tourist sites are limited to the Temple of Dancing Waters and two museums. Functional sites include places to hire boats, the central dispatch office, the office of the Golconar Voice, the departure point for the Malibar hills, sundry government offices and a number of select schools where the childen of those living in the Diamond are dumped - er I mean enrolled - until they are old enough to understand beauty.

Even the most elaborate lodging houses are far cheaper than on the Diamond and of comparable luxury. There are many shops and all kinds of entertainment. It has a jolly, cheerful atmosphere that feels odd considering it is the disease capital of Bashkher. Perhaps the inhabitants are dancing on the edge of disaster.

The engine and three carriages that travel to and from the Malibar hills leave daily at 11 am and again at 7pm the journey taking two hours. Return services are 5 am and 3 pm. You can make the 11 am service if you wish. Lodging at Malibar is limited to the Malibar Halt Lodge. It is very basic and relatively cheap but the services are room and curried goat.

You can place an advert in the Golconar Voice. It will appear the day after you pay for it. Circulation extends to Malibar. There is no guarantee it will be seen of course.

OOC> If you need to go shopping etc. you may do so but the story will not really advance until you talk to Bembolia. I am happy to role play whatever you choose though. So a burglary spree or a visit to a brothel - the choice is yours.

"It seems we have a bit of time to do what we want." said Gnaag when he heard about the timetable for Malibar. I would be happy if we could do something usefull. And I find usefull improving of my skills, so excuse me for a short time.

Gnaag went round the nearest building. Nothing special was to see there. Some people were chatting. Suddenly he saw an opportunity. He had never done it before. He chosen to become thief, but T'skar wasn't very diligent teacher. He had to prove himself.

On small desk was belayed an extra nice coat. A fat man staying beside it and chatting to pretty young girl was probably an owner. Gnaag smiled. Not too expensive to get to jail, but still worth of try. Just to keep their attention elswhere. Suitable stone hit pot on the other side of road. Gnaag was immediately by the coat. He put hands on it. Marvelous feeling in his heart. "It wasn't so difficult," he thought.

As gnaag takes the coat he overhears what the man is saying to the girl.

"Never want to see the coat again. Every time I put it on something horrible happens. I believe someone has placed a curse on it. Take it back. Give it away. Let a thief run off with it. I don't care. Just keep it out of my sight."

Gnaag picked the coat and slowly without any haste moved back to his group. The words about curse of coat sounded in his head. Probably he couldn't wear it never after he heard it. A very nice solution appeared to him, when he came back to the place where his group was.

"Tiax, I realized, that I was foolish a bit since our expedition started. Now, please accept this coat I ... er... get for you. It's the little I can do to make our relation better."

Baba, having watched the whole procedure from a distance, leans over to Gnaag and punches him softly in the ribs. ;)

He leans closer to Gnaag and whispers, “that’s not very nice, …………….”, and then laughs out loud. :D
