The Master Of Zooz

"Well, all I can say is good luck to you. I can't bear the woman. She was born into privilege and is scarcely civil to any but those few who she considers as equals. She is known for the offering of bargains she does not fulfil and for finding ways to get all she can for nothing. But, as I said before, she has her weakness - vanity. She does everything she can to stay looking like the beautiful young twenty-year-old she was forty years ago. What you need is to have something she really thinks she wants. Not something about you - she will simply have you arrested and take it; not knowledge she could 'extract' from you. Maybe getting into the temple is necessary for you to produce or confirm the existence of something that would help her. That might work. If you can convince her."

The archivist sees more people arriving and glances at you to see if you have any last question.

" Thank you for all the information, it will probably prove useful in our travels. "

Turning to T'Skar with a grin, " I do believe we have an old woman to make feel young. Perhaps I have an "age cream" somewhere in my pouch. "

ooc> I would say so, yes. I think we've finished here. "One more unto the beach, dear friends, once more!" 8)

ic> "I don't know about age cream, Aldhem," says Kalmer. "But I feel we shall all be in need of some sun cream! To Ippikander!"

His companions are somewhat taken aback by this unfittingly witty outburst from the stern Tagfierian....

ooc> let's hope the next bit of the quote doesn't apply

You have no problem getting to Ippikander even though the route takes you through Biksinder, a place you do not look around for reasons of safety. It might be safe; especially if the reason is that the make up of your party has changed since the sword in Dohoti was stolen. If it is simply because they lost the trail you don't wish to encourage them to find it again.

You arrive at the port at the northern end of a long groyne down which you have to walk in the heat of mid morning. The sky is cloudless and azure. At least the sun is behind you. To your right you can see the shimmering yellowness of the sand beach. To your left the houses and temples extend as far as you can see. A hill ahead of you some way away has a number of large buildings glowing whitely in the sunshine.

Information you will have gleaned from fellow travellers and your guidebook includes the following nuggets:-

The city has five areas, the beach and promenade; the entertainments district; the old centre where the Skull Temple may be found; Museum Hill, and housing in 'neighbourhoods'. At the end of the groyne the beach is to your right, the entertainment district is to your immediate left; the old centre is also left, beyond the entertainment district; museum hill you can see ahead. The neighbourhoods contain local shopping and inn facilities suitable to the lifestyle of the inhabitants. The large neighbourhood (Lapalma) that extends south from the beach and entertainments districts as far as the museums is for the very wealthy only. The small area south of the old centre (Arosa) is for artisans and city workers. The usual Bashkheri slums are on the other side of the old centre, as far away from the beach playground as possible. This neighbourhood doesn't have a name but is usually referred to as 'the hovels'.

The city has a governor called Solimp Peemore. But it is apparent that he does as he is told by Arminda Sagrami.

The beach is, in theory, available to anyone. However the far western end is the enclave of the very rich and unless wearing the latest in top fashion beachwear you will be completely ignored. An area mid way between the dock and this enclave is forbidden to everyone but no one you speak to knows quite why. A rather ugly building closed by a rusty grating is found there but it is always locked and its purpose unknown. (Or rather unknown to any you meet.)

Many visitors employ the services of a guide and as you approach the end of the groyne you see a row of ragged-trousered boys shouting prices at those coming into the city.

You have the chance to hire one yourself.

Accommodation varies in price according to neighbourhood. There are four places to stay outside the neighbourhoods. The Beach Palace (guess where?) is the most expensive hotel in all Bashkher. The Colonnade on museum hill is not too far behind. Sea and Sand lies in the entertainment centre. It is medium price but rather noisy. The Laughing Camel is in the old centre.

It is 11 am.

"Well, here we are, and I feel so over-dressed," T'skar muses ruefully, "All these skimpy new swimsuits, there are no pockets to lighten. Ah well, guess we will have to stick to our quests." Looking at the rest, she says "So what first? Do we just go straight to Arminda Sagrami and tell her we need access to the museum and Temple? The forthright approach does have some advantages; the biggest disadvantage is that she may just throw us in prison to rot away the rest of our lives. Did you mention something about have a letter from Bharat, Aldhelm? That may work as an approach."

OOC> karkarinus if you were taken aback by Aldhelm's reaction, sorry but I was trying to show how funny he thought the situation was. One minute he is discussing overthrowing immortals with a girl made of bones, the next he is trying to figure out how to coerce an old lady worried about aging. Seems a little more relaxed, don't you think?

After leaving the archives and after getting off the boat, Aldhelm is rather overwhelmed with the sites of the beach city. He has never seen this much water in one place ever. It stretches as far as the eye can see, as opposed to the rivers he had been traveling on earlier. And the people of the town seemed to have devoted several industries to making use of this water for recreation.

"I don't know T'Skar, I might have the letter somewhere in my satchel. Ah, here!" Aldhelm pulls out the battered piece of parchment from his satchel, Bharat Desani's script is still quite legible even with all that this parchment has seen. "This should be quite a good conversation starter. As for some coercive force, perhaps a few Restore Fatigue potions, to make her feel young and spry might also help us gain entry into the temple. I have a few of those as well in my satchel. "

ooc> hint: you need to fix lodgings. Various things will happen depending on which you choose. Also, you have earlier been told where to find Arminda Sagrami (and what you'll need to do to get her even to look at you). If you have forgotten you can get or talk to a guide.

ooc> Absolutely not taken aback by Aldhelm's reaction! I explained myself badly: "the stern Tagferian" was Kalmer, who normally doesn't come out with funny stuff, but bit by bit is lightening up as the quest goes on, and realising that there is nothing wrong with a bit of humour ;) . I'M sorry for the misunderstanding :)

ic> "We shall need to find lodgings." Says Kalmer as they walk along the groyne towards the town. "And our money will be better spent on fashionable raiment than on top class hotels, unless we can find a decent source of income." He glances at T'Skar. "However, we need to keep up some kind of appearance, so I feel the Laughing Camel is out of the question. What say we take a look at The Colonnade? And then we should visit the fashion boutiques."

EDIT: "We should also hire a guide." Kalmer beckons one of the boys over to the group.

As you are nearly the last leaving the boat you have a choice of only three guides. One looks very young, perhaps 7 years old, one about 14 has a scar across his face and has been blinded in one eye, one seems very ordinary and rather too well dressed. All three come across.

The youngster says cheekily, "I know everything."

The well dressed one says with a swagger, "I know everyone."

The disfigured one says in a sad voice, "I tell the truth."

Take your pick.
