Im just curious where people get the most of their inspiration from when it comes to creating their mods. As for me, I havent modded much at all. Ive only got one mod finished so far and Im currently working on my next, but I can contribute some.

My first mod was primarily inspired by a few things I saw in vanilla oblivion and mostly my own imagination.

The mod Im working on currently is a very different creature. The original idea was inspired by another mod here on TESNexus. One aspect I got from previews to a movie I recently saw. Another from EverQuest.

Shamefully, I admit that I have a problem when it comes to beginning my dungeons. So I usually use a random dungeon generator to get me started with a template. The only time I dont do this is usually when I have a specific encounter in mind. Then its all me.

Other than that it's only the ideas for the encounters themselves that is purely inspired by my own imagination.

I guess I draw on alot sources for my ideas, what about you?

When I mod, I usually do it for myself (which is quite rarely in itself). Usually what I wish to alter in the game are mostly issues I had in the Vanilla version of Oblivion, or mixing two mods I downloaded from elsewhere together to make the load of the game easier on the game itself and the system.

When I'm not doing one of those two things, I sometimes add additional areas to pre-existing dungeons/caves/etc. and base the add-ons on the appearance of earlier parts of the locale. Sometimes I'll make an Ayleid ruin change from a cave filled with undead to a rebel base that goes periodically to harass the people and guards of a city.

Usually things just hit me when I'm playing. I get ideas like, Hmmm... that's a lot of wasted space... , or Man, there's gotta be a better way to... or What? That's it? Where's the beef? or whatever. Most of my ideas are born from frustration or annoyance, I suppose.

Somewhere inside my head there is a... let's call it a wellspring. Out of this wellspring flows a strong, steady stream of inspiration in its most pure, undiluted state - the very essence of creativity - filling my head with ideas on a constant basis, forming itself into radiant dreams and shadowy phantasm entirely on its own accord. It is a wild and chaotic type of creativity; it cannot be controled or managed, it cannot be reasoned with, and it never ever runs dry.

What I'm trying to say is; I suffer from a kind of inspiration surpluss, and thinking of ways I can bend Oblivion to my will and use it to shape my own stories just happens to be one of my many much-needed outlets of that inspiration.

I have more ideas than I will ever be able to put into the game because it takes so long. Much of my inspiration comes from playing bad mods and bad vanilla quests and dungeons. I yawn and frown and say, "What a wasted opportunity! This could have been so cool!" Some of my inspiration is actually just hackwork. Make a new dungeon and it will be fun because it is new and has never been played before. I must confess that a great deal of my inspiration came from Morrowind which was in many respects a better game than Oblivion. Oblivion looks really cool and is easy and popular, but Morrowind sure had awesome game dynamics, strategy, tactics, and role-playing.
