Trouble with Mass Effect on PC.

I downloaded and installed Mass Effect this morning. On the highest settings, it runs fine, except for this. Often if I open a container, get a codex update, or enter the pause menu, unplayable stuttering will start, and last for about 20-30 seconds. This can also happen from conversations. It seems that lowering the graphical settings may fix this problem, but I'm going to test further. That doesn't make sense, because it runs fine in hectic battles, but if I open my menu, it will start stuttering like crazy. I have more than double the ram, and a much better CPU/graphics card than the recommended settings. This does not happen on other video games that require more ram, a better CPU, and a better graphics card. Thanks in advance.
