ptbptb
First things first - do mods you download work? If not then my first suspect would be that you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7 and have Oblivion installed in the default directory ("C:\Program Files(x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion"). Oblivion should be installed somewhere like C:\Games\Oblivion.

ptbptb
the exernal harddrive uses a usb port to plug into computerI'm surprised it's fast enough to play Oblivion then. i had a mod i made myself (im trying to work threw the beginers tutrial thing on the wiki so all i realy did was make a big beer bottle and make a door unlock/become neutral) since it wouldn't work i downloaded the Aberwiin Manor mod but my computer freezes whenever i try to start that one Aberwiin Manor is a bit ambitious for a starting mod. Presuming you've got the official patches installed (up to version 1.2.0416) then you should probably first try Unofficial Oblivion Patch then Unofficial Oblivion Patch Hotfix v323a. After that goes Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch (if you have Shivering Isles) and Unofficial Official Mods Patch (if you have any of the official DLC mods). ptbptb
also i dont know how to update the game If your game isn't updated to 1.2.0416 lots of mods will not work. See here for patcheshttp://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/updates_patches.htm To tell what version you have start Oblivion and see what number is written at the bottom left hand of the screen.
