lack of religious importance

what seems like a missed trick is a mod where you can convert people to a specific religion- (including atheism for the so inclined)

i just don't like giving a begger a coin and hearing blessing of akatosh on ye from the poorly voiced one- makes me have to use the hilarity spell mod and turn them into sheep, which- whilst satisfying in its own way, doesn't really help the game

what really bothers me is there is no reference or any kind of mention of monotheism in the game-

Er, why should there be monotheism in the game? There're no monotheistic religions mentioned in lore (unless you take the Dark Brotherhood, who worship Sithis and deny any divinity outside of him).

Also, :Against the Zealots of the Nine. Has monotheism.

Not all beggars speak praise akatosh, only those in the IC do. Other beggars speak praise of whichever deity is linked with their town. Although it is poorly voiced, it is still voiced, which puts it on slightly better terms than what a mod could do otherwise.

Although I would be inclined to agree that religion is something which is often underplayed in Oblivion, this is probably a good thing considering how many people tend to complain about this sort of stuff when it doesn't parallel their own religious traditions. In the TES world, monotheism really just isn't viable since, within the fantasy world, the deities actually have physical bodies, manifest themselves directly, by name, and often have conflicting opinions and motives. Multiple deities in RPG games is nothing new, and tends to be far more interesting from a story and play standpoint. If there were only one response being made in this case, you'd still be just as sick of it.

Really though, what is missing from this idea is an actual benefit to converting or paying tribute to a specific deity in the game. Why go through all that trouble if your only aim is to remove a few lines of spoken dialogue.

CLERIC!

THAT's what's been missing all this time. I knew there was something missing along the lines of character archtypes, and now I see it. There are no Cleric player Character Options.

In Morrowind, of course, you could be a Lay Cleric for either the Nine or the Tribunal, but there is no such option in Oblivion for that sort of thing.

Hmm... I guess they must have decided there wasn't going to be enough room for that, since they already had to cut out a few quests just to get the game to fit on a single disc.

Bummer. In D&D I had a lot of fun playing clerics. They can be pretty fun.

*sigh* Ah, good old Brother Osgood... a fire & brimstone holy warrior if ever there was one.. SO funny.

I think there is plenty of room for more religious oriented mods, and with some focus on atheism as well. After all, Elsa God Hater seems to think that gods never actually do anything and there are plenty of daedra worshipers. I also think there is some room for mono theism. I think an idea borrowed from StarGate could make a great monotheistic religion oriented mod.

Think of it, some big bad guy who wants to become a god and so he starts talking trash about the current gods. He can perform some pretty amazing "miracles" with what power he has and so he starts to convert people. With a growing number of followers, his power grows also, eventually making him quite dangerous to the existing gods. I was going to do something like this with the mod Im working on right now, but it didnt work out for the story line i came up with.

There are plenty of things that can be done along these lines. I have two more ideas just off hand for some new god scenarios

Ah, Else might not be the best example to use. She kinda makes us Atheists look bad. Ulene Helervu's got a bit better attitude.

Anyway, it might be fun to play the Hitchens of Nirn.

She is also a

Sleeper agent for the mythic dawn

so this obviously isn't the case.

I'd like to see some opposing religious sects out there in cyrodiil that wasn't technically some evil entity of cult worship. Like a new way to worship the nine divine, or even deny the nine even exist and say its some other god. An all out church hatred for others not believing in you but both are not evil in their practice.

Well, yes, but the

daedric princes

aren't reallt GODS as we understand them, just extremely powerful creatures, and their existence is as much a fact as gravity, so an Atheist on Nirn would just be one who doesn't believe in the god's, i.e Aedra, Lorkhan, the Nord gods, the Almsivi (or at least thinks they're not gods), etc.

No one in Oblivion thinks the Daedra don't exist, that would be absurd.
