Changing/editing ambient sounds associated with objects

I am trying to learn how to do certain things and what is not a good idea to change or edit. I have an area in a snack bar with a VERY loud rusted fan in the ceiling that the sound loops continuously. I have pulled it up in the GECK and the only place I can find to edit the sound is by editing the base object. It gives you a menu of dozens of sounds that this object (rusty fan) will loop. Off the top of my head I believe the sound was something like AMBfanrattle or similar. (I'm at work right now and I was playing with this last night. But I assume AMB means ambient.)

So, I wanted a quieter fan and didn't see anything that looked like it would reduce the volume of the noise associated with that object, so I started just listening to what each sound was until I found a quiet one. It ended up being something-radio, but it seemed to be completely silent, so I changed it, lol. So far it seemed to have worked as I have had no issues, and my room is nice and quiet.

So, I guess my questions are:

1- is there a problem or potential problem with what I did?

2 - By editing the base object have I changed that fan for everywhere in the entire game it exists or just this mod, and if so is there a problem with that?

3 - Is there a way to simply lower the volume on objects like these if you wish to? I only saw things that appeared to adjust the direction of the sound, not the volume.

I hope my terminology is correct, and sorry for the fairly elementary questions, but I have done searches on the wiki and on here and really didn't see anything relevant to my questions. Yes, I am a noob...

1- Yes and no. It won't kill you game, but you have changed this sound everywhere in the game. This will lead to conficts with other mods if you ever release your. If you are only doing this for you own game, then there are not really any worries.

2- (see #1) What you should have done was edit the object's base ID and given it a new one. This way you will be making a new object that won't conflict with the original. Then you can edit away at your heart's content without causing any conflicts. This is the standard method when you want to make a change to an object - make a new one and use it instead of the original.

3- Check out this wiki page on sound. From there you will see that "Static Attenuation: Adjusts the sound's maximum volume, relative to it's volume within the source sound file"

Thank you pkleiss, I will try those options out. Hopefully, I can just change it back to it's original form and "attenuate" the sound out. If not I might just remove the thing as it don't really add that much to the room anyway, lol. I'm sure I'll ask a lot of stupid questions as I am trying to learn some of this stuff. I know it's basic stuff, but I did learn how to navigate around in the geck and even added a bunch of radios in various rooms in the mod I'm tinkering with. And they all work too! I even scaled a few to fit in some tight little spots out of the way. lol. Thanks again! :)
