hey all, recently upgraded to windows 8.1 and had fo3 goty running perfect but yesterday decided to do a clean install. game installed fine but now when i click on the launcher/fallout.exe or try and run it with fose through fomm, the mouse cursor changes to the blue spinning wheel for a couple of seconds then nothing happens.

I've tried every compatibility setting under the sun and still nothing, all i get from the compatibility trouble shooter is "incompatible program" even though until yesterday it was running perfectly!

Fose activated a permission setting ,see, the OS has built in antivirus detection and you are getting false indicators by Windows it's self, it has quarantined Fose and all that went along for the ride.

reset permissions on the games files, and you need to repeat this twice on 8.1, sense i don't know how you have things installed, assistance is limited here.

If it is in C;\program files and folders, well then no, it's not going to run there. and now the files are tagged as owned by the OS so permissions are assigned to all of them.

moving the game out won't work. Complete uninstall will .

reinstall out side the Progarm folders and then reset permissions on the Entire game for you, the user.....twice.

If it is a steam download? I have no idea what to do for you. most of the bugs are the OS faults.

hi purr4me, seen you around the quest for heaven pages :P just doing a reinstall now so fingers crossed. I install fo3 to a separate drive away from the c drive so keep anything from messing it up/delete my mods, not a steam download either :/

open properties or the executable; Nut's I don't have 8.1 online right now so this is from memory.

  • On the tab's select security, then select your user name in the open window.

There are a few other things too that might be a problem. I would require full disclosure of your setup, system hardware and what has bee n done for all of it.

This is cheap info, it costs only eye ball time. Throw me a ball of Yarn.

cannot find anything that lets me set system wide authority :( all the little permissions boxes are ticked for everything i can find.

Running windows 8.1 64bit, Amd phenom II X2 550 processor, 4GB RAM and a Radeon HD 7850 for my graphics card. all i've done is install fallout 3 exactly the same way i have a hundred times before, haven't even installed any mods yet (fomm is installed though but after i installed the game)

ok but it runs all the other files, if any of those other files are also needing to be set, you need to check them. Fose included. fallout3.exe

hmm. system wide, is in the system properties, sort of just like I described, only the maps look like tiles, and word is built into just every thing.

Just be carful. you will find where the hang up is, it's not the game files, it's the OS.
