Mission Bug: Cheydinhal Recommendation

I have been working my way through the Mages Guild's Recommendation missions and have encountered a strange issue with the mission objective of Cheyindhal.

Early on in the game I was given the task of retrieving the Ring of Burden from Vidkun's corpse, and initially had no problems entering the well to discover the ring. Due to the ring's nature, I didnt want to risk losing any of my items by dropping them and so elected to return to collect it having slipstreamed my inventory. I got sidetracked by various other missions for a goodfew game days (and about 10 real hours) and only recently opted to return to the quest for further advancement.

When I returned to the well the floating corpse, and hence the ring, had disappeared completely! The green mission marker points towards the well exit, and the red marker points to the well entrance from outside. I have tried talking to Deetsan and all the other mages, but they still insist that I need to collect the AWOL ring.

I tried loading the earliest save-game (which was a few days after the quest had been given to me) to see if the same situation occurred, only to find that the corpse was still missing!

Therefore I am completely stuck in my advancement up the Guild ranks and may never be able to sample the power of creating new spells at the University. Is there any known way of somehow clearing this quest, by fair means or foul? I can perhaps upload my earliest save so that people may try the quest out for themselves to see if it is bugged.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like when you enter the well for the first time, it trigers the placement of a dead body with the various items on it.

Since dead bodies are removed after a few game days, it went away because you left it for too long.

Why it is still gone when you go back to it from an earlier saved game I dunno. Is the earlier save from before you ever went into the well at all to first discover the body?

I'm sure there is a way to get the dead body with the items back via the console (or just get the ring itself) but I don't know how offhand. I vaguely remember a few quests that sometimes broke in morrowind could be fixed that way (resurecting dead NPCs required for the quest, etc...).

Something like open the TES game editor and find the object/NPC you need, get it's "system" name/ID.

Then from the console within the game there was a command to restart a dead NPC or to "summon" the missing object and have it placed into your inventory. Dunno if it works the same in Oblivion though.

okay i dunno if this will work but maybe pull down the console, use the add item cheat and use 0002E5AC According to planet elder scrolls that's the code thingy for the ring of burden. Hopefully that will allow those who need it to finish the quest.

What about if you are playing XBox? Do you think there is a patch or something to fix this. Once the body is gone youare screwed because you can't complete the quest! :(

what are you talking about is a bug, every corpse in vanilla oblivion disappears after 3 days, if the dead person is respawnable he/she will respawn. but there are some permanent corpses which wont disappear no matter what and developers forgot to mark vidkun as permament...

Just wondering if anyone knows a fix for this problem yet (see first post - Vidkun's body disappearing from Cheydinhal Mages Guild well). I have encountered the same problem so it would appear that none of the patches (including the unofficial patches) have addressed this problem.
