Minor Skills Not Leveling Up

I created a monk and like to maximise my skill level bonus before leveling the character, so I've been casting spells in each of the spell schools. However destruction is stuck on 7 and wont go up any further. all the others are around 20+. I thought maybe it was a limit of the spell, so I bought a couple of others (and even got given the minor fireball from the mage guild quest, but casting these also dont move the destruction skill. I assume it is a bug and not some hard limit to the skill based on your class??! its not that big a deal to me since I have two other categories to work on that stat, but I was wondering if anyone else had the problem? next character I play will be a mage type, so I hope destruction will level then, but what if it doesnt!! maybe some other minor skill fails to skill up...

as usual there are lots of other bugs, but harder to pin down unlike this one.

You can't level a skill that primarily affects others simply by casting it. Since destruction spells are all target or touch, they have to actually hit something to gain experience. It's the same as blade or blunt - you dont level

by aimlessley swinging your weapon around :)

One solution for levelling quickly is to use an AoE spell such as fireball on the ground near yourself, but sadly that isn't available until Journeyman level. The obvious downside is that you damage yourself, but combined with a fire shield and some simple restoration heals the only bottleneck from this point would be your magicka regeneration rate.

Ok thanks ck. I'll have to try this. Its weird though, because I dont recall using it that much on others. of course it makes sense, since I've never expected that just swinging my weapon around or just pressing block (shift) would allow me to level that skill up (I'm now wondering if I practice on a dummy if it would give "xp", and skill up). however I do think I can level up restoration just by casting it, even though I'm not really healing myself (I think that should be changed if its true). I've been leveling up some other skills by using starlight and the spell that allows you to see others behind walls/doors. So it makes sense there because you are "actively" using them (though you could say that if you are in broad daylight that you are gaining no benefit from starlight so, should gain no increase). I'm all for a "more difficult" (realistic) skill up process. anyway thanks for the info

if modskill is used would it indicate green on the skill? I'll shoot a few fireballs at some mobs and see what happens and report back anyway :-)
