Oblivion becomes unresponsive when loading

I was enjoying Oblivion for a few months when one day it started becoming unresponsive when i loaded a game. The game would open normally, and i would choose my save, and then nothing. The screen froze, the mouse froze, and the image of the map just sat there mocking me. :wallbash: The only way to exit was ctrl alt delete. Assuming this was a corrupted save, i attempted to start a new game. Same deal. I had many different mods running as well as obse, obmm, patches, ect. After much frustration, i decided to try a clean install. I uninstalled with control panel, manually deleted saves and remaining data, and removed all oblivion and bethesda related entries from windows registry. (vista, by the way) I restarted and reinstalled, with no mods, but had the exact same problem. OK so it must be this scratch on the CD. What else could it be? I bought a new copy, did another clean install, and its still freezing at the same point. I have allowed oblivion.exe through my firewall and AVG anti-virus, and ended all tasks related to my HP printer (possible software conflict). No matter what i try the game will not load a game, start a new game, or even exit without completely freezing. Also i seem to remember music playing during the title screen. It doesn't anymore. I don't know if that's relevant or not. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

The uninstall/reinstall should have worked. It's possible you may have missed one of the Registry entries. Try this for reinstalling

Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the articles section of the Nexus

Nope. Clean install wont work. Also i just installed fallout for the first time and its doing the same thing. Is there maybe a software/hardware conflict i am not aware of. I have a realtek sound card, ati radeon 4800 video card. avg virus protection, all of which i have heard can cause problems. I created exceptions for oblivion.exe in avg and windows firewall. I dont think my computer likes bethesda

Thank you for the suggestions, but unfortunately nothing has worked. I cleaned the registry with ccleaner, restarting before and after, to no avail. I passed the system requirements test with flying colors. I also performed a clean startup, but neither game would start. I'm a noob, but i've followed directions exactly. I think it's something else. Is it possible that this is related to Securom?

The only securom issue I have heard of is with no cd programs. Even with perfectly legal no cd programs such as alcohol securom prevents the game from installing - but not from running after it is installed.
