Putting those houses to good use!

I'm sure everyone here has noticed that Big Town is flanked on at least three sides by a bunch of boarded-up ranch homes. I understand that Big Town was supposedly built upon the ruins of an old suburb, but it nevertheless pisses me off that not a single one of those houses can be explored in any way. Pretty lame.

 

And so this is what I'm going to dedicate some of my time to - opening up the majority of these ranch homes. Being that Big Town is pretty much devoid of merchants and facilities, I was thinking of maybe sticking a scavenger or two in there. Otherwise, loot? Skill books? Quests? Player home? The point is to put Big Town to a bit of use, and this is where I need some suggestions. Is there anything anyone here would like to see in that area?

I know there are a few mods that have done this with some of the abandoned buildings in the DC Ruins.

 

As far as what you've mentioned already. I don't think scavengers would bother looking into the buildings around Big Town. I'd assume Big Towns residents had already pulled most things of value out of them.

 

That said, thinking of what they would have left behind...Skill books would be cool, maybe one or two. Ammo would likely be left behind if it was in a locked container, as well as components for created weapons (Toy cars, paint guns).

 

A player home would also be very interesting. I'm a huge fan of player homes, and wish there were more of them. I've seen some really cool things done with them, but it seems that a lot of them are truly lacking in one or two areas.

Well, scavengers scavenge. And even if they didn't find much of value in there, what better place to set up 'temporary' camp than in a sturdy building? As for loot, yeah, pretty much what you said. Scattering of useful materials, a skill book or two and maybe a Quantum tucked behind something. I'm currently working on a house with a door to a cellar, which is locked and requires a key. A note nearby prompts the player to search for said key. There could be some halfway-decent goodies down there or something.

 

A player house is going to be a bit iffy. The thing I don't like about most player houses is how everything is left for you there on a silver platter.

i allways wanted to see big town come alive. prehaps a couple of scavanger merchants. one house could contain a small group of mercenaries for hire. it doesnt have to be much imo, just some subtley place items. a small underground bunker that contains the dead previous resident and all their valuables is a cool idea. you could make it really descrete and not put where it is in the description. hope this mod comes to life. if you need any sound work i can do anyhing really. shout me

Well for my two cents what I would like too see out of big town, what would fit in with the grand mod im putting together, would be a big town that aside from teaching them to fight or repairing the robot or whatever you would then add the additional quest of arming and armoring the little bastards, then next quest too help them find materials too expand town wall, I'll design the wall for you if you want, I make very nice town walls. At which point other ppl will move inn and the town will expand and merchants will move in.

 

Then they can become a fiefdom of the kingdom of the wastelander and join the wastelanders private army in his quest to unite the independent townships of the waste, except for Republic of Dave, that's not a township it's a rival nation state and verymuch must die, the battle against which the big towners must participate in too prove their loyalty to the Empire but that's a differnt mod that this fictioinal big town would fit into

 

All that bullshit aside what I want most out of Big Town is alittle gratitude from those rotten little bastards, like maybe in the form of free medical care, or omg maybe a thank you :blink:

I'll be honest, I'm not to big on turning this mod into a scriptfest or anything. Dissent's and Anubis's ideas are great, but all I'm wanting to do here is add a bit of passive usefulness to Big Town and raise the exploration factor a bit. Also, I cantfriggingstand how many boarded-up houses there are in this game. So far, I've added:

 

1 home occupied by a scavenger who can sell and repair

2 abandoned homes with varying pieces of loot to find

1 abandoned home with a locked cellar and a note that prompts you to search for the key. The cellar is chock full of goodies.

1 fortified bunker with some decent arms in one of the houses built into the side of Big Town. It's locked, and there's a key somewhere, but it's a secret. :3

 

I plan on adding one more house, but I'm stuck on what to put in it. I was thinking about a mild player house, but I'm rather new to that sort of thing and I'm not exactly sure how to do it. If someone could help me out there, that'd be great.

I like this idea - lots of houses in fallout are completely ruined, yet some are simply boarded up - I'd like to see more things to explore and more people to talk to and interact with. Work hard!

 

I'd like to de-board some of the other vanilla buildings. Any idea of places to continue with?

nice so far. could do with tarting up the inside of the house the scavanger lives in a little more. couple of broken motorbikes more junk, that sort of thing.

i would definatly recomend making one of the houses ocupied by 3-4 mercs as a mini barracks. i also think that the red rocket station could do with having somthing built into it, like the undergrond hideout has a man hole cover. there is definatly more that could be done to this but im having a hard time thinking subtley...
