weezer22
When I went to rivet city Charon started to say "This place is not safe." I was wondering why he was saying this, rivet city seems pretty safe to me. Also is he better with a shotgun or an assault rifle? And if i give him stimpacks will he use them? WoogieMonster
He makes the "unsafe" comment for 2 reasons, 1 is that when you're on the brow, there is a rivet city guard on the bridgewing targeting you, he's friendly of course, but he still targets you when you stand on the brow. The 2nd reason is that once you become either good or evil, the area in front of the pier becomes an ambush point for people trying to collect the bounty on you. Most companions will use the stimpaks you give them. Charon and Fawkes heal themselves very quickly after each battle so they may not use the stims as often as others. Charon's shotgun is better than other shotguns and I think it also has infinite ammo and health (only for him). You can give him multiple weapons if you want, he is not as dumb as most enemies. As long as he has the correct ammo, he will use the best weapon for the situation he is fighting.Example: give him a missile launcher, a rifle and his shotgun. He will fire the missile then switch to the rifle and if the enemy charges him he will switch again to his shotgun for close combat, and he even aims for the head. And that 2nd reason already happened to me when i didnt have charon, i just had dogmeat.
JA stu
Since Charon tells me that Megaton, Rivet city, and Underworld aren't safe I just guess that he just recycles the same scripted sentences whenever the game feels like it, but if there is actually a reason behind it then it is new to me! I would say that he is better with his shotgun, it is a preset so it probably has some hidden skills different to an normal shotgun. I am pretty sure that whatever gun that an npc has if you give them just one piece of ammo for it it lasts forever. So it is a matter of power and range. WoogieMonster
Since Charon tells me that Megaton, Rivet city, and Underworld aren't safe I just guess that he just recycles the same scripted sentences whenever the game feels like it, but if there is actually a reason behind it then it is new to me!For Megaton, there are several triggers: random raider attacks at the front gate, hunters / slavers / yao guai / special-event spawns on the west side, and death claw / robobrain / giant scorpions spawn on the east side. Inside Megaton, he may speak near Jerrico, the sheriff, Moira's bodyguard, and inside the pub depending on your karma. In Rivet city on the brow and the area directly in front of the brow, and inside the ship when you're near Flak or Shrapnel or Harkness.I don't know why he doesn't like Underworld, maybe it's because he was basically a slave there, or maybe because you're a smoothskin and a lot of the ghouls there don't like you. I would say that he is better with his shotgun, it is a preset so it probably has some hidden skills different to an normal shotgun. I am pretty sure that whatever gun that an npc has if you give them just one piece of ammo for it it lasts forever. So it is a matter of power and range. From the wiki:Charon's unique shotgun does not deteriorate, has infinite ammo, and has its unique firing spread and firing rate. It will fire perfectly straight with a very tight spread that hardly gets wider. It cannot be interacted with. Compared to standard combat shotgun, Charon's shotgun has MUCH higher accuracy and longer range with smaller magazine size (5 instead of 12). Generally speaking, Charon's shotgun outclasses any other shotguns. Since Small Guns is one of Charon's tag skills, he will deal more damage with it as he levels. Despite the fact that its appearance is identical to the standard combat shotgun, Charon's shotgun is a lever action shotgun, unlike the combat shotgun which is semi-automatic. This means it needs to be cocked for each round. This weapon cannot be looted from his corpse and can only be acquired by using the appropriate console command. Charon's Shotgun uses an NPC-only type of Shotgun Shells.
Zephyr2011
regarding the "infinite ammo supply" for npcs, I've done some tinkiering in the GECK for any weapon you'll see check boxes in the upper right hand corner of it's data menu, one of these reads: "NPC's use ammo" or soemthing to the same effect, in short, any npc using most any weapon (since it's unchecked by default) has infinite ammo, it's not a coincidence that any time you see a raider with a missile launcher he only has one or two on him and it so happens that every time theres almost the same ammount. Some munition types are not "playable" that is, the player cannot use or interact them however scripts, npcs, and creatures can, turret and follower ammo is a prime example of this. NPCs only need one bullet (or projectile, or power pack) and can fire forever with (almost) any weapon. If you look at turrets in the GECK you'll find they have just a few pieces of ammo on them, same with most npcs, they'll have a small amount, not anything really feasable for the wasteland but if every npc had a feasable amount of bullets then you'd end up never having to worry about ammo again, you could just go kill some raiders and get a thousand shells or so. Ok I've digressed enough, just thought I'd put in my two bits for why npcs can shoot forever.
Mikako
1: Charon Is my Favorite Companion, he is ugly, but... not annoying. 2: His Shotgun Rocks the World. Combat Shotguns are one of the better weapons you can get early on in the game and they show effectiveness even on normal mode all the way up into the 20+ level range. He really needs no other weapons, unless you want him to have a longer range weapon but I myself rather do all the long range shooting anyways.
