well when i am fighting the spiders i have Leliana as archer, Morigann as dps cc mage, my warden the tank and sten the dps warr. well before the fight i setup traps using Leliana (i am control her mainly though the fight other time is use morigann's aoe or reposition sten) when i fighting the spider queen i let my warden tank the spider well sten move in first and got traped and my warden just charge to spider queen to tank and position sten opposit site as tank to dps and Morigann just dps on queen and Leliana use scatter shots to draw little spiders to traps and Morigann just aoe once they all close and traped. and i pause the game if there is little spider didn't got pull by leliana and set sten to attack the weakness enemy first to get it off tank. the fight wasn't long although i beat that part with only sten alive in the end. =.= messed one part in middle

I used Shale as my tank, setting one of his tactics to protect my PC and one to protect the Mage I had with me. I used Morrigan as she deals more damage the way I set her up. I also had Leliana with me and had trained her about evenly between being an archer and a good backstabber. I utilize the dual settings, where you can equip each character with a different set of weapons, and kept myself, Leliana both using the bows. I chose Myself, Leliana and Morrigan as a group and had Shale stay in one place, near us. making small movements forwards attracts spiders and with the ranging shots I'd do major damage to them, killing them many time before they'd reach us. And IF they did, Shale's big blows would kill them fast and do minimum damage to me, and the others.

Unfortunately the queen will eventually begin to attack, once she has seen the party, but with careful maneuvering, you can attract ALL the spiders to gain range attacks and minimize Party damage with the "Tank" for protection. If you achieve the Queen all alone and no other spiders, release Shale to freely move, yet retain control of the 3 ranged party members and blast away while Shale pummels the crap out of the Queen. I had to do a lot of space bar tapping and healing of Shale, but the Queen rises into the ceiling quit a bit and releases other spiders that the ranging shots help get rid of fast, as she lowers herself into the fray again and again. If you get surrounded, don't hesitate to tap the space bar and switch weapon specialties for the PC and Leliana or other such range abilitied NPC, to quick fight your way out of the crown and do a lot of running. Don't stop if you can help it and the Queen will eventually come down and in many cases you can quickly set a range again with the 3 in control as one unit and do more damage to it as Shale runs to it to fight it. Tactics, Tactics, Tactics! Learn how to use them and they will be a valuable ally. That's just my input and use it in combo with other's suggestions and maybe you won't take 4 tries like I did to beat it. Took my 4th tactic switch to at last try this tactic and it worked for me.

i think your mage need some control spells, at first i thought that control spells are useless BUT i've changed my mind and made another mage with controlling spells like MIND BLAST, PARALYZE GLYPH, WARDING GLYPH, with only one or two primal spells i like ice spells better cause it can make the enemy shatters :)

 

also you need to build alistair as your tank, equip him with the best armor you got.

 

i hope this will help you, and you can always get some items at ruck, just dont intimidate him, ask him to trade with you :)
