LegoManIAm94
Does this happen when you put your disk in and your computer then it restarts. Then try to uninstall your disk drive then restart your computer and log in to your account then once the disk drive reinstalls try putting oblivion in and see if it works. To uninstall your disk drive for windows XP click start, control panel, performance and maintenance, system, hardware, device manager, dvd/cd rom drives, then right click it then click uninstall. BE CAREFUL THAT YOU DO NOT UNINSTALL ANYTHING ELSE SUCH AS YOUR MONITOR
ptbptb
Try renaming or deleting the oblivion.ini file (...\My Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Oblivion.ini) That's what I was going to suggest if he'd changed his video card. I didn't realize it can be a problem even if the hardware is the same.
Deleted800546User
Eh, this is weird. Now that I can finally play, the mouse locks up after about 3 minutes ingame, I can't click or move and the keyboard seems to stop working as well. When I alt-tab everything is fine though, so it's got something to do with oblivion itself. I searched for it on the forums, but I've only found threads without solutions. anyone happen to know what's causing this?

That is most likely due to a background task /program. xfire is, IIRC, a particular problem. I suggest using Game Booster and shutting down unnecessary background tasks as well as programs like Google Talk that can pop-up stuff while you're playing. Anti-virus programs may also cause problems (if you're willing to take the risk of suspending them ...).
Deleted800546User
Just tried that, didn't work either. I've yet to try turning off my anti virus though, but I'll do that some other time.
bben46
At one time the HP printer driver caused lock ups, I believe that was fixed either by a newer printer driver or an Oblivion patch. Are you playing in full screen or windowed mode? Windowed mode allows other programs to run under Oblivion. Alt-tab out does not work with XP - it will crash 3 out of 5 times when you try it. I'm using Win7 now and have never had a crash from alt-tab, or from running another program at the same time. Messaging programs will automatically check for new messages at a preset interval. If they take too long it can cause a lock up.Some programs automatically check for updates every so often, but usually no more than once per session. However, some will keep trying if they don't get through - even if your internet connection is shut off. MS update is one of them. I'm not sure about programs like twitter, but I suspect they check every so often also. Check for background processes that access the internet on some kind of schedule, and turn that schedule off. I should point out that I'm using Win 7 and I have had crashes that appear to be associated with use of <alt>+<tab>. They don't usually happen immediately, but some time later while playing the game. Deleted800546User
I'll give windowed mode a try. I don't have an HP printer, and alt-tab'ing never used to make it crash from what I remember. EDIT: Eh, no luck on windowed mode, still locking up. Alt-tab doesn't crash it, it doesn't change anything.
bben46
When I first started using Win7 I purposely tried all of the things that had crashed when playing XP. I was unable to force a crash using alt-tab. At one time I was running A heavily modded Oblivion, 4 copies of Firefox, Skype (actually talking to someone) a word processor and another game (Return to Castle Wolfenstein) all at once and was able to toggle between each of them with no problems. A huge improvement over WinXP.I also have a dual core cpu, 4 Gig of ram and dual monitors, but I'm not sure if that makes any difference or not. If you use a wireless mouse, check your batteries and the location of your receiver - If I get my mouse too close to the receiver it locks up. My mouse is on a keyboard drawer, and when I push the drawer all the way in, the mouse freezes. But it comes back if I pull it out at least an inch.
