A Newbie Rpg Player's Thoughts On What Will Make Oblivion Better..

I am a throughly new player to RPGs and in fact, this is the first computer game I had!!! BUt my computer cannot really run it... well one person cannot have anything... this are just thoughts on what I think could make the game better.... This is my first time playing games ah, so don't really blame me if I like insulted anyone's idea of what the game should be like. I will therefore apoplogise first. And please tell me if you think there are any mods that can make the game I want it to.

Why Classes?

I read a lot of faqs and it frightens me a lot. About all those balanced chracter stuff, and how if you don't level up correctly, the game could become too difficult. Than a lot of things about all those planning level ups so you can max attritbutes all those stuff...

For a new player like me, that's scary. I wish they can remove the classes things, than my attritubes can really depends on the skills I used, instead of being determind by all those hmm classes stuffs, besides I don't know if I am a better combat, magic or stealth until like at least a 1/4 into the game.

And also, since I am unknown in the beginning, I figured that I should not be good in anything..than maybe I will have more fun actually training, using and determining who I am really supposed to be....

Besides I think power gaming is kind of wrong, because in theory, if you are good in something, as in you train for it (which is the class thing), why will you use other skills? This is purely from my own point of view.

Bribery

I get fairly upset when I get to bribe everybody, even every single guard... Is everyone that corrupt? That's okay, but since bribery has made speechcraft redundant, as my bf only bribes people, there should be some sort of penalty... Like when you bribe like 200 coins in total, your infamy will increase by 1 or something like that, to make bribery less attractive. After all, you are corrupt, going around bribing people... Makes you seem less moral.

Useless skills

There are some which people like call useless skills in the game, maybe speechcraft (which my bf thinks it's quite redundent, since he bribes), security (since there are open lock spells), hand to hand (if i got knife, why I use hand), merchantile (I really don't know why and how to use it, since I have more or less enough money to get things I want.. or pick up... I have played for around 3 days and I have not bought anything before. Sold things though. I have some quirky ideas though, maybe someone could mod it out.

Force people to master speechcraft to advance in guilds. As you advance in rank and become more important, I think it is important for you to lead better, therefore you have to speak better.

For security... maybe anti-magic locks will be nice. Those trapped locks that react when a spell is cast on them.

Hand to hand... maybe like guarded areas, in which you cannot have weapons, maybe castles, where you have to remove your weapon before going in. Does make hand to hand needed once in a while.

Mercentile... I have really no idea how to increase usage of this, except make money more difficult to get... or make prices really ridiculously high unless you have fair amount of mercentile... One really good thing though will be to make the prices of rooms... negotiable... or even guild beds, but at lower rent.

This is all so far. I am fairly happy with the game... haha, maybe because it is my first. Haha..will be happy if people can help me or tell me why it should not be like that

Mercantile can also be used to sell things for more and if you look at the bonuses as you increase your ability most pertain to allowing merchants to have more cash to give you for stuff. And buying things cheaper is nice too.

Hand to hand though i havent played around with it yet i assume is as valid a fighting skill as those of weapons or at least hope. As you skill that up you get better attacks like weapons and i hope they have some form of fist weapons or the like as hand to hand combat (martial arts, etc.) can be just as deadly as a well placed arrow.

Your points on bribary is fair enough and the no classes idea is interesting as it would in one way make it more open but at the same time destroy all guide lines. Your point on anti magic locks is a good idea too actually.

Im not sure about Oblivion as i have not played too much yet but in Morrowind making people like you could become very important and bribery could become very very expensive this was not such a big detterent once you were end game and richer than anyone anywhere but worked nicely enough to start with. I think they should make it so (if they havent already) some people are much more resistant to bribe taking than others depending on their personality (skills and such).

I think they have.

I do not know the exact formula, but I do know that when talking to, say, a commoner bribery gets you far, whereas talking to a guard gets me less disposition per gold piece. Also, as people like me more, bribery gives you less of a boost for the same amount. You get the biggest boost at the start of the conversation, but bribery is the only thing besides buying things that will get you past your "disposition maxed" point of the minigame.

well bribery is not necessarely a bad thing... like in the real world all things are not 4 free,

so as wisely said in elder scrolls 3 morrowind "bribery is more like a lubricant for business" so if you want to get something from an NPC, you got to give something back: either money(bribe) or some good words(speechcraft). In terms of gameplay bribery is costly and at the beggining you do not have the loot to just bribe the whole town, so a little sweet talking will have to to the trick. Later in the game when you have enough money to own a judge or two :) , it will probably be the prefered way to raise NPC's disposition.

The human body is the most dangerous and deadly weapon. It is more precise and faster than any hand held weapon on earth. No kiddin' . In oblivion unarmed combat drains the fatigue of enemies and thus makes them collapse. I know it sounds funny but used properly unnarmed attaks can dish more damage than blade weapon attacks. Plus using unnarmed attaks and acrobatics doge gives you a kinda martial art stile of fighting in which you don't just charge at you enemies but let them hit, let them make a mistake and make them regret that mistake with a well placed uppercut that at master level paralyses your opponent.

mercantile skill is used automatically when you barter with merchants. The more extra money you get, the more you increase your skill; simple. the innitial amount of money that a merchant demands/pays for an item depends on his/hers disposition towards you, the amount of money that you actually pay/get in the end depends on you mercantile skill. it is not that bad to buy cheap and sell at high cost. also if you combine mercantile and alchemy, will allow you to nail some fast cash at the beggining from selling potions 8) .

about the usless skills... well there are some skills that you will use more often than others. for example you will use combat skills, armor skills, sneaking, more often than mercantile, speechcraft, magic skills if you are a fighter, fighting skills if you are a mage. but the game is not about making a supreme character that will make the earth shake when he breathes, but to make a character that can master the skills he has. Thus I reccomand a char. with five skills that will supplement each other and two skills that you just plain enjoy to use.

welcome to the world of gaming and enjoy your stay! ;)

With Oblivion, you can play any kind of game you like. You don't have to play anyone else's game. You don't have to do the main quest and save the world. Just find and play the type of game that you enjoy.

For my first character in Oblivion, I picked seven skills that sounded like they would be fun an made them my major skills. My character came out close to the standard Bard class so I made a custom class called Troubadour. If you don't like any of the pre-made classes, just build a character you like and make up your own custom class. I saw one player who is an Archaeologist which sounds pretty cool.

My character, Sorian Nothus, has a mixture of combat, stealth, and magic skills. He has joined the Thieves and Mages Guilds but is spending most of his time with the Mages so far. He is also doing lots of general exploring and adventuring. Who knows what paths he will eventually take?

Sorian is a charming guy who like to play the persuasion game with everyone. He uses some bribes but that's a personal choice.

I don't think there are any useless skills as long as there are players who enjoy using them.

I wouldn't even worry about that stuff if you're not a hardcore min/max gamer. I picked a race with good starting stats and skill bonuses for the things I wanted to do, then made a custom class with the skills I knew I was going to use the most, and have not had any problems.

All your class does is to make 7 of your skills level faster than the others, and I think in oblivion makes all skills of your class type (combat, magic, stealth) level a little faster too. So if your 7 main skills are mostly combat oriented, and you choose a combat type class, they should go up relatively quickly. If you go everywhere and do everything you will end up a few levels lower than the min/max characters, and probably won't have 100 in every stat, but you can still do well enough to get through the game. All the skill and attribute planning is for people who want the perfect character when they're done. If all you want to do is play, then go play. It will be alright.

...so you are saying if you came to my house and tried to kill me, you would rather have a fist than...a desert eagle?

If you are a master in the martial arts, one sharp rap in the correct place on the body will kill someone.

And in Oblivion, H2H damages health, to make Monk a viable class.

Didnt they change that from Morrowinds system so now it just do straight damage or did i read that wrong?

well it hand to hand does direct health damage and fatigue damage. U can check some sites or game manual 4 more info. I the ammount of fatigue damage I don't know it yet, cuz I din't do enough experiments regarding this matter.
