Teotzlcoatl
Is there not a general Elder Scrolls forum? For Daggerfall and such? Y'all should make one! This is my thread about why Oblivion wasn't that great compared to Morrowind and Daggerfall.

Teotzlcoatl
Oblivion compared to Morrowind and Daggerfall was terrible... or perhaps just different, but not what I was looking for in a TES game.
Pronam
-:- Lemme help. Oblivion was kind of cold compared to morrowind, and for those that played daggerfall maybe even more (I didn't play it.). I wasn't really happy about it all being a valley towards the IC. Which at itself I found quite a disappointment. The capital of power of the Empire and it all seemed to be so small. Even though all section combined it'll be quite large..seeing them apart just made it look quite small. Although when I'm a little time in the regions I can enjoy the game. Once I get see the IC everything seems so pale and empty. I've also missed a few aspects that were shown/told at the developer-videos. Although I understand some parts are kept out. Some parts have gotten trough a mayor change, or have be totally turned to another way. The quests of the guilds weren't that bad, it was just the atmosphere. What was before in previous game was somehow only put into the DB. I've never had the feeling I've been a part of the other guilds in Oblivion. Lore-wise a lot has been put aside and done to put more time to other aspects of the game that did went well..thats why a larger portion of people played it. Though now they've succeeded that, I'd expect the next game not to have this as they can put more to the feeling again :).
Teotzlcoatl
If you like Morrowind at all I really encourage you to go download Daggerfall (it's free at ElderScrolls.com). It's a great game! Oblivion lacked the depth of the other games... it just had good graphics and better fighting... not what I'm looking for in an RPG... Plus it was waaay to easy and it really "held your hand" if you know what I mean... There should be two TES games... one for kids around 8-16 and another one for adults 18+. theuseless
I agree with pronam, though I did play daggerfel. It was awesome. I believe they were about 2 years overdue with releasing Oblivion. It seems as though they put a lot of time into making the CS work, which is cool with me. If you look at fallout 3, it is essentialy the same game. The only non-cosmetic changes in the game were mainly story based. In other words, they had their engine completed and focused on story (which is still somewhat lacking) in fallout3. It looks like they spent so much time refining their engine they simply couldn't finish oblivion. If you look around the game map enough, you will see all kinds of stuff half finished. They announced the game 5 years before they released it, building up all of our hopes. I think that once modded, that Oblivion quickly turns into one of the best games I've ever played. It just took the combined effort of thousands to make it fun. Maybe for the next elder scrolls they will hire on a larger team of quest scripters. They pretty much have everything they need. Just dump OBSE into the engine, up the graphix and then ta-da, they are ready for the likes of the talented folks here. I'm sure that people would be at least willing to help with general feedback or ideas, if not being employed directly.
Thor.
The game was ok on its own, but the atmosphere and dark feel to the game kind of turned me away from finishing it for the second time, but there is the 5 minute finish with the temple district cheat if i had to finish the game quickly. the one thing that keep me playing the game is all those mods and and expansions, lets hope the new Elderscrolls is better when it comes to voice acting, having 5 races and 7 voice actors kind makes it to artificial. lets hope the new one has much, much larger cast. Teotzlcoatl
I've never played any of the games modded, morrowind, daggerfall or oblivion (I've even played Arena) and Morrowind is still by far the best. The only thing better about Oblivion was it was smoother and the combat was slightly better. I HATED how you leveled up and all the people you fight and armor and weapons levels up too... so retarded!
zprospero
I agree that the leveling system didn't really work out well. Morrowind preserved more immersion by the fact that you couldwander into a situation where you had no chance of survival. It was a lot scarier adventuring in Morrowind becauseyou could die any second if you made a bad decision. The fast-travel system is something that I use all of the time, but as annoying as it is to walk all the way across the map tojust end up hopelessly lost it still made it feel much more real. But the leveling system's biggest flaw was that it removed therewards of random adventuring. If you risked your life sneakingthrough a place that you have no business being in at your leveland miraculously survived, you would get some really amazing loot.I'm thinking mainly of the times I've made the run across Solstheimat level 2 or 3 to reach Thirsk and the hollowed tree stump. The way it feels is different too. Morrowind felt mystical and unique. The Ayleid just aren't interesting in comparison to the Dwemer. Combine that with less interesting characters inhabiting themuch fewer guilds (except the DB) and the fairly conventialarchitecture (How awesome were Telvanni towns, really?),it just doesn't feel as... magical, I guess. They don't have a many really unique random thingsin comparison either. I once found a cave where a guyhad summoned an Ogrim and some scamps and theycooked up his friends, locked him up, and made himwear a skirt. It pertained to nothing, but it wasthere. Or the more risque things like theHouse of Earthly Delights in Suran. All the games have their good and bad points though. This game set a new standard in terms of graphics, and the combat system is much better. The dialoguetoo was quite a massive undertaking. When you justthink about it as character, it seems not so bad, butfor each new voice you have to add every 'ugh' and 'yawn'or 'I've fought mudcrabs fiercer than you!'
