Performance problems

My hardware setup:

Athlon 64 X2 5400+ Black Edition @ 2.8 GHZ, 4GB OCZ Platinum Rev. 2 Ram, 4-4-4-15, His Radeon 4850 512 MB.

Oblivion simply works slow. And not in the stuttery way - the statters sometimes do appear, but not too frequently. Outdoors work alright too, unless it's close to the cities (that arc-shaped waterfront building for example), but I'm getting HORRIBLE framerate in parts of cities and with many NPCs. Like the IC Market District. Also, for some reason the stone room in the tutorial part was slow as well (the one where you lose sight of the emperor for the first time), even though back then I had very few mods installed.

I've installed the Redimized & Reduced QTP3 pack, but removed it due to even lower FPS.

All graphics settings are on max, tested on 1680x1050, 1440x900 & 1280x800. Going down to that last one only marginally improved the situation. Going down to the last one with everything but textures to minimum made the game work perfectly, but it looked like something out of N64. >.>

Use fewer visual mods. Your videocard doesn't have enough RAM to handle it. Start off with Vanilla graphics and unaltered .ini (probably cranked up loading distances too didn't you?), get things working and THEN see about adding some small improvements. Smaller non-widescreen resolution would also be a good idea.

The problem is that the only visual mod I can think of that I'm using are the 2048x2048 resolution textures for characters. No texture packs or anything, though now I'm testing parallax and normal maps.

It was slowing down back when I was using very few mods, HGEC H-cup body without animations and maybe two or three other ones, it was still slowing down in that jail dungeon.

Well, in menu settings everything's on max with HDR, no AA but 8x AF.

The thing that puzzles me is that I run a fairly modded version of Fallout 3 on the same rig, max settings, AAx2, AFx8 with few problems, Gears of War on max and Crysis on max, although at 1440x900 + AAx2 AFx16. And they all work pretty fast.

Note that the Oblivion engine it's quite a "resource pig", and running so much mods will furtherly slow it down. Try disabling all your mods (or at least all those animation\sexy mods, never seen so many in a load order :P). Also read TweakGuides - Oblivion. ini (link) to make the game use more of you resources to improve performance.

I may be wrong, but I've heard that the game loads every esp file in "data", even inactive ones, but then it uses only those marked active; so if you want to test the vanilla or semi-vanilla game, you'll have to uninstall the mods properly (OBMM is just a bless in this cases).

All the Unique Landscapes set (including the Imperial Isle which will murder your FPS, especially around the waterfront district without a higher end graphics card) and the Natural series by Max are graphical memory glutton "visual" mods.

Might be worth trying Streamline to see if you get a jump. I'd suggest lowpoly grass too but you say your problem is focussed more around the cities and indoors in places.

(apologies if you have both or one or the other. My eyes started to bleed reading that wall of text you call a load order. heh heh)

And from my understanding, Ytse is correct, Oblivion will load up every ESM & ESP, but as it won't use them beyond initial loading, thats only going to slow up loading times (I think... I've been wrong before.)

  • 4 weeks later...

Well, gone be UL, welcome Streamline and OSR, gone be some of the ini changes (mainly going from 8x the preloadlimit to 4x and back to 3 and 36 for cell buffers, welcome some mesh optimization packs and the script optimizer. Speedline seems to have made the greatest difference.

Still, one peculiar fact - what playing with both task manager and Ati overdrive panel open in the side-display, the CPU is utilized from 50 to 80%, but the gfx card never goes past 4%. ._.; While in Gears of War it often went up to 80-99%.

Is my CPU too weak for the game?

Update: Well, with ~8 enemies in a cave I managed to get my card to ~30%, ~35% when i opened the inventory and rapidly started rotating and moving my character's silver light armour-clad minature in it.

Read that, followed, still the same. Whenever there's more NPCs on the screen, like, more than 3-4, the game slows down significantly. It also slows down slightly when looking up a main tower in an Oblivion gate, from the bottom, inside it.

For example in Imperial City, when everything is set to maximum and Streamline's StreamSmooth is off, with the 10 or more NPCs there visible, when looking from one of the side-doors (the ones leading to another section of the city on the circle, not to the central part with the tower or outside), the game slows down to around 6-10 FPS. Similar things happened in one Lost Spires quest, when there were several bandits in one part of the cave, on a small island on an underwater lake.

The game also tends to stutter when horse-riding, but I guess that's unavoidable.

Last thing I would suggest then is dropping the background tasks. With your revised mod list, your card & machine are certainly powerful enough to handle the game, unless theres a fault with something somewhere we have overlooked, but as your problems seem focussed on just Oblivion, thats unlikely...

As mentioned, Oblivion is a serious resource hog, so clear as much of that background clutter as you can. Things like cftmon, card monitors, mobile phone programs... stuff like that. If its open its using RAM, wether you are using the program or not.

Well, I'm checking ram usage live and it never goes past ~80% when playing the game... And yeah, just Oblivion, just played Bioshock 2 on max details without a hitch.

just checked with a new character, I get ~20 fps in the prison cell once the two guards, one blade member and the emperor appear there, 16-17 in tpp mode. 24 before any characters appear there. Much too slow. :<
