Corrupted Saves..... On Every Save.

Alright, I have been trying to fix this problem for hours and have gotten nowhere. It seems that every time I make a save, the program crashes and I am left with a partially completed corrupted save. I have tried using both Stramline and Autosaver + Incremental Saver to try and see if it was the game's save system that was the problem, but even the saves made by both programs are being corrupted. I disabled the majority of the mods I had control over and still could not find a solution. As a last resort, I have painstakingly uninstalled oblivion and all mods associated with it and spent 4 hours reinstalling it.... Only to watch it happen again. I am not sure what is wrong. These are the mods I am using:

Bashed Patch and Streamline should come after these:

72 Jpm's Vampire Hunters.esp

73 Nec-Mystic Dark ElF.esp

74 ElaborateEyes-RensBeautyPackFull.esp

75 1SB_LucreziaNavarre outfit.esp

76 [Hexaae] Get Wet v0.92.esp

77 Silverlight Armor by Jojjo.esp

78 Warglaives by Jojjo v1.0.esp

But otherwise there's nothing I can see that should cause this. I use some of the same mods, but not Streamline.

Make sure you have ALL Autosaves disabled in the Game Options as these are known to corrupt saves. But on a new install and a new character it shouldn't happen so soon.

However, if you're using your old saves, or one that works, the problem is probably contained in the save data and most likely will continue to happen.

You may have to start a new game altogether and enable a few mods at a time, ones that you know work for example. Test, then add more and test them as well. Keep backups of good saves in case.

Disable any mods that affect saving for a start. They may or may not be the cause.

autosavertest.esp is one that comes to mind since it's name Autosaver. I don't know what it's supposed to do besides the obvious name, but that would be a good place to start since as I said Auto saves can eventually corrupt all saves.

I second Checking out the autosaver. I do use streamline and while I make use of its autosave feature without any issues, the fact that you have an "autosavertest" mod just screams out at me as a potential problem source.

does this happen after reaching a certain point respectivly after a specific amount of game time have passed? i've finished the main quest and began playing quest mods. but then out of nowhere i couldn't save anymore. exactly the same problem as you: ctd's with corrupted saves. this happens always after entering a certain quest related area.

Sorry for my late responses everyone.

Maigrets, I had a bad feeling about my old saves after I reinstalled Oblivion. The fact that it now takes 5-7 seconds delay for a save troubles me. I know it is pointless in asking you or anyone else reading this, but is there a way to make corrupted saves usable again? After hours of research into the issue, I have not found a single solution for repairing tainted saves. I suppose I could use Bash to import my characters into new games, but I feel as though 350 hours combined are now down the drain. As for the load order, I will do as you say by putting Streamline and Bashed Patch last in the order, as well as incrementally activating each mod with a new game.... :ermm: Obviously I am a bit discouraged by this, but it is part of the risk of modding.

Stars2heaven (and Maigrets), thanks for the info about disabling autosaver. I am aware that the autosave feature in Oblivion is bugged, but I used that and Streamsave not only for autosaves, but for a replacement for quicksaves and regular saves as well.... All of them were becoming tainted as a result of the CTDs. I apologize if I was not clear enough about that.... Which leads me to Mooncarver's post...

Mooncarver, I wish that was the case. I have 2 characters, one that had completed the main storyline and one that did not. If I knew which dungeons where the problem ones, I would have avoided them like the plague. However. the crashes happened randomly at random places... In dungeons, towns, wilderness...... Kind of like a box of chocolates. You never know what you will get.

I appreciate the help. Hopefully some more members will have other workarounds and input as well.

@ Sealwarrior

Unfortunately once your saves are corrupted there's no fixing them as far as I'm aware. However, the 5-7 seconds delay on saving makes me wonder if you have save game bloat.

What is the size of your save game? Even after completing every quest, dungeon, picked up every item not nailed down your saves should still be under 10mb. Since you use Bash, use it to check your saves for bloat and if it's present Bash can fix it.

This happens when mods use a function called "Placeatme" to add items to the world. Over time this can cause severe issues because items that should be removed at respawning time are not. Saving and loading issues would be the first problems and then corruption because of the sheer amount of data the game has to save and load.

There's some info here about it if you're interested.

http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/PlaceAtMe

Every single thing you do is recorded in your save. When there are problems, that data is carried over to the next save and so on. Over time too many errors leads to corruption. Often finding the cause isn't so easy.

No, not at all. You should be able to play with good saves indefinitely as long as the mods you use work well together. If it's a specific quest area and always happens there then that tells you it's probably a problem with that mod. You could disable the mod causing the issue and see if you can save.

As long as you keep your previous saves and go back to them, you won't lose your progress in the quest, but if the mod is the cause you may have to look into the cause. Try contacting the author or read the comments section of the mod entry etc. Other users may have had the same issues and resolved them.

There is an issue after a certain amount of game time has passed (around 200 hours or so) where animations like fire flickering, doors opening and closing, magic effects and more begin to slow down and eventually stop even though the rest of the game goes on as normal.

Wrye Bash can also fix this. It's called the A Bomb effect.

Other than that you may have to look into your load order and check whether the mods you're using work well together. There may be patches available.

Sorry for the delay again.

Stars2heaven, thanks for the link, but I've already read it. Even though you have not read it, I think you know of this solution as well. I know that you can replace the .ess file with one of the .baks, but those also get corrupted for me as well.

Maigrets, thanks for the info about the save bloat problem and the link concerning "placeatme." I have tried to remove the bloat from one of my good saves and start from there. My save was about 11.6 mb before removing the bloat, and 11.3 mb afterwards. After removing the bloat using Bash, I continued playing for a while. I experienced no major crashes, but as soon as I decided to test saving again, I had another CTD and a new corrupted save. This was a regular save, as I had disabled autosaves and had not quicksaved since I started. I had used 2 regular saves to track my progress: One before entering a dungeon or town, and another upon exiting them. I believe the corruption sprang about after saving inside an ayleid ruin just as I was about to leave it. Using Bash to check the statistics of the corrupted save yielded this message:

Traceback (most recent call last):

File "C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\Mopy\basher.py", line 8702, in Execute

saveFile.load(SubProgress(progress,0,0.9))

File "C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\Mopy\bosh.py", line 5677, in load

self.tempEffects = ins.read(size)

OverflowError: long int too large to convert to int

I have seen people post comments about such messages before, but I have yet to understand what it truly means. I'll consult the Bash FAQ to see if it is referenced there. If anyone else is reading this, perhaps they can offer some feedback as well.

Alright, I am stumped. I now understand that this message has something to do with Python, or at least I think it does. The last line seemed to sum it all up, but I have no idea what it means or how to fix it..... I do not know code that well, I am afraid. I can only surmise through a long google session that it is a conversion problem with Python, and perhaps a few other things as well. What is actually being converted I do not know, and I am not sure if that is actually the only problem. As far as I know such messages have not been addressed as of yet, and I can now understand why that is. If anyone is looking at this and thinking to themselves "what is this fool talking about," don't worry. If you have the same problem, I just think it would be wiser to import your old character to a new game. If anyone is willing to delve into this quagmire any further, I can only wish you good luck  .....
