Corrupted Saves..... On Every Save.

@mooncarver:
does this happen after reaching a certain point respectivly after a specific amount of game time have passed? i've finished the main quest and began playing quest mods. but then out of nowhere i couldn't save anymore. exactly the same problem as you: ctd's with corrupted saves. this happens always after entering a certain quest related area.

No, not at all. You should be able to play with good saves indefinitely as long as the mods you use work well together. If it's a specific quest area and always happens there then that tells you it's probably a problem with that mod. You could disable the mod causing the issue and see if you can save.

As long as you keep your previous saves and go back to them, you won't lose your progress in the quest, but if the mod is the cause you may have to look into the cause. Try contacting the author or read the comments section of the mod entry etc. Other users may have had the same issues and resolved them.

There is an issue after a certain amount of game time has passed (around 200 hours or so) where animations like fire flickering, doors opening and closing, magic effects and more begin to slow down and eventually stop even though the rest of the game goes on as normal.

Wrye Bash can also fix this. It's called the A Bomb effect.

Other than that you may have to look into your load order and check whether the mods you're using work well together. There may be patches available.

thanks for your reply.

well, it's not the first time i'm experiencing this. after finishing SI i went back to tamriel and started the red dawn quest mod. after reaching a particular point (traveling to the shack of a witch i was supposed to escort) saving the game became impossible. it didn't matter whether i loaded the most recent or an older save (for example before accepting this mission). game crashed on me every time.

i decided to load an earlier save, where i was more or less in the middle of the SI storyline. i simply turned around and went back to tamriel and voila, i was able to advance further in the mods storyline. i assumed, SI was somehow responsible for this bug. but then, in the middle of another questmod (assassination missions), same thing started happening all over again. as soon as i enter a ship where my next target (a khaijit pirate) is hiding, i can't save the game anymore.

now i'm assuming that it's connected to my playtime or something. maybe in this savegame (SI main quest not finished) i've reached the same amount of playtime as in the other save (SI finished). is there a hack to manipulate the ingame clock? what if i can trick this thing into thinking that it's not supposed to crash an saving, YET!?

i was really excited to try all the popular quest mods, like malevolence. now i can't play oblivion at all.

Oh my.... I have the same problem with Oblivion and it took away almost all the pleasure from playing.

Here's my story: I've been playing oblivion with one character for quite long time. Finished all the quests apart from the main one and SI. Installed some mods from time to time. Experienced some random CTDs, but very rarely.

Then i decided to do the Shivering Isles. At first there were no problems at all - I've done the first 4 or 5 quests with no crash. Then there was some random crash while fighting the knights of order, and a little later, while exploring some quest-related dungeon crash crash crash crash on autosave and saving. So i moved to a previous save, and it seemed all right, but then I visited that dungeon again, and the problem occured again.

So I've tried loading previous saves, and some of them were better (it was possible to save), but it was all like time-bomb of save corruption - after a few hours of playing the CTDs became more and more frequent, up to a point where the game crashed at every save and it was impossible to play.

I have searched for an answer for a long time, tried streamline, reinstalled oblivion and all the mods, tried mod-cleaning, nothing worked. So finally, I moved to a savegame from before enetering Shivering Isles.

And the problem seemed to magically disappear. I played for some time (about 2-3 days of really intensive playing, something like 7 hours a day... well, I'm a little addicted, i suppose :P), looted some vanilla dungeons, played the Naked Nord mod and started the Lost Spires.

When I was in the middle of Lost Spires (and it took me some time to do it :( ) the exactly same problem came AGAIN. Everything fine until one point in one dungeon, then all saves corrupted. Tried tracing it back, it was the same way - 'somehow better, but getting worse over time'

I'm desperate. When I finish my exams, I want to reinstall my operating system (that's not oblivion related) and then try installing the game again, with some mods of my choice. I thought for a while that this problem may be related with a lot of mods being installed and uninstalled in the game, so I wanted to make a list of mods, stick to it, and hope everything will be fine.

But now, as I'm reading this thread my hope is almost gone and I'm starting to worry that it may be something that just 'happens' to a savegame after a long period of time. :(

There is an issue with respect to the number of saves in the save directory itself, as well as the number of files in the data folder.

It's come up before but for the life of me I cannot remember what the max number is.

Try searching here and on the official forums.

Sorry I can't be of more help

yeah, sounds familiar. would you mind posting your mod list? maybe we have similiar mods installed and this might help determine the culprit.

Done.

That's what BOSS says. I used a slightly different load order, but now I can't trace it back (after I gave up on this game I started to install a lot of mods just to check them out - because I didn't want to do much of installing/uninstalling mods after the system reinstallation, because I thought that may be the cause of crashes.

Anyway, I tried turning off different mod combinations, even turned off all of the mods - that wasn't very helpful. I guess once the save gets semi-corrupted (playable, but getting corrupted saves) there's not much that can be done.

Right now my Oblivion is a total disaster. I've observed missing textures (plain purple and black shoes, Imperial Guards helmets turning pink), the game also crashes at certain locations. I have spotted one - somewhere in Blackwood, as I am approaching the Drunken sth Inn, the game always crashes. It is Lost Spires-related - the problem stops when i turn off that mod. But, on the other hand, Wrye, OBMM Conflict Detector and any other utilities can't find Lost Spires conflicting with anything from my load order.

I'm very confused.

Edit: My modlist used to be longer, but after first reinstallation of Oblivion I tried to cut down on mods. I used all of the Unique Landscapes, along with some Water, Weather, butterflies&stuff mods, and a lot of homes and animations that I don't use right now, but at some point of the game, my saves depended on these mods. I use Frostcrag Reborn right now (that is not visible from the load list, because the esp name is the same as the original Bethesda's mod)

I am also using OBSE, with some funny crash-prevention utility (it made my computer make a beeping sound before oblivion crashed :D), I have installed BOSS and Streamline, all of them were supposed to solve this problem but they didn't.

Edit 2:

Okey, I have checked what mods we have in common. They are:

1. Shivering Isles and offical Bethesda stuff

2. Unofficial Patches

3. Kvatch Rebuilt

4. Key Chain

5. Quest Award Leveling

6. Ren's Beauty Pack

Not much of it. There is also one thing in my story that makes me belive that this save corruption is something that comes over time rather than an instant mod conflict:

As I was playing oblivion with a couple of mods installed (the times when everything seemed to be all right), I showed it to my boyfriend, and he played Oblivion on my laptop. Kvatch Rebuilt and Ren's Beauty Pack were surely installed by then. I am nearly sure that Unofficial Patches and Quest Award Leveling were also present at the moment. He played and completed Shivering Isles with a new character without any problems. Some time after that (and installing only some minor mods, like clothing, homes, etc), I went to Shivering Isles with my old char... and you know the story. :(

this is my mod list. doesn't seem to be that similar after all, i guess.

i went back to a slightly older savegame. it looks like i can save and load multiple times while i'm in the imperial city (where i left off). but after 1 area transition (regardless which area i'm entering) i can't load the game after saving in the new area. after 2 transitions the game won't let me even save the game properly. conclusion: this problem doesn't seem to be connected with certain locations or playtime but it is related to area transitions. however, i don't understand why this game keeps running as if everything is fine but as soon as i try to save it consistently crashes during the save process.

btw. i've already cleaned both my savegame and data folders, leaving only the essential stuff. unfortunately it didn't help either.

edit: could it be that we somehow messed up this whole batched patch thing?

Re: Quaxalot

I have seen an article somewhere relating to this. Oblivion (as well as Morrowind and FO3) all have the problem. It is related to the game engine itself. It seems that Oblivion looks at EVERY mod in the data folder, whether it is active or not. And after about 400 it starts having weird problems.

The simple solution is to move all unused mods completely out of the oblivion folder and into a holding folder somewhere. A subfolder under Oblivion is not recommended.

@mooncarver & efikmalydoskonaly: How many mods do you have in the data folder? Even the unused ones. Let us know if this has any affect on your problem.

I also recommend removing streamline while troubleshooting as it makes changes in the Oblivion.ini during game play.

I am using a different computer now so I can't tell you the exact number, but it isn't terrifing - there is no more than 10-15 mods that I am not using, but are installed.

Before the first reinstallation of Oblivion (I've done it about 3 times) I used to have more mods, including inactive ones (but I seriously doubt if that number even hit 80). My mistake was, that I never cleaned the data folder apart from the esps, so at that time there might had been some unnecessary meshes/textures/sounds. Could it affect the save games even after they were long gone?

I have installed Streamline after the problems started and I don't keep it active.

i have 120 mods in total + some additional folders created by various mods, like oblivionXP, streamline (which i don't use), frans and obse. i'm even using wrye's "ghost feature" to hide non-active mods so oblivion won't have too much trouble doing whatever it does. well at least this is what i assume this feature is for.
