Moving files from my old XP hard-drive to a new W7 PC

Recommended Posts

My old XP PC broke down so I bought new w7 PC.

The XP hard-drive isnt broken and I need to save my oblivion mod files/etc from it. Both w7 and xp hard-drives are SATA type and should be easy to install.

But I want to make some things clear before doing anything:

SATA1 socket has win7 HDD, SATA2 has DVD-drive, and im going to install the XP HDD on SATA3 socket.

After installing it and before starting w7, do i have to fix something in the boot menu so it wont start XP and w7 at the same time or w/e?

(I just want to get the files from the XP HDD. Going to remove it after moving the files)

Should be no problem. Even leaving the XP HD in it. You could make it an optional boot drive. Then have it boot either on Sata1 with Win7 or Sata3 with XP. Or wipe the old XP drive and use it as a data or backup drive - you can give it any drive letter you wish. I have one old drive as my B drive. But some BIOS will not allow that. It will usually automatically mount as E: if C: and D: are already taken. if you want to you could move the DVD to another letter, then move the XP drive to D: then set the DVD as E: Lots of possibilities.

You cannot just move the Oblivion though. It must be installed on the drive. Preferably NOT in the default location. Make a new folder such as C:\Games and install it there. Then move the data and saves folders. Be sure to NOT move the oblivion.ini though, as you will need to generate a new one for your new hardware.

Other programs that are installed such as OBMM, Wrye Bash and OBSE should also be reinstalled on the new drive instead of just moved.

I know that i have to re-install oblivion. Had the stupid "SI-patcher-wont-install-because-vanillapatch-is-installed" bug. And already googled that i will need the 32bit versions of python/etc. for wrye bash. (Im just going to copy/move the mod files,i know which files oblivion/SI installs)

So, i dont even have to touch the boot menu to make the XP HD work with the W7 HD? (Just making sure, i dont want to mess up the W7  )

I dont care about the letter/etc. i just want to move the oblivion mod files and my Guild Wars file (all campaigns installed & updated... NOT going to install & update it again :wallbash: And the exe can detect & install the game with the files on W7 HD)

Havent installed the xp HD yet.

In boot menu i can only press enter on 1 of 2 choices (2nd is dvd-drive i think). But the 1st is only some numbers/letters. When i use enter on it, it starts windows7 like normal. (So i think its the W7 HD)

My question is:

Is boot menu only used for choosing which HD is used for booting?

EDIT: Is this the right way to install the xp HD: Just put the HD in and push the power on.

When you install the XP hd, it should take a minute and inform you that new hardware has been detected. And then tell you it has been successfully installed and is ready to use.

Only then will it appear on the boot list. Most BIOS will not show any device that is not installed. So if you remove it, it will not appear.

Sata drives are usually identified by their manufacturers drive type and size such as WD2345-80 This would indicate a Western digital type 2345 drive and 80G capacity. Different manufacturers drives may present this information differently. So read the information on the XP drive to see what the model number is and any other identifying information that could be shown.

Literally, just plug it in, turn on your PC, and boot it up as normal. then, once you're in Windows 7, wait a minute or two, as Bben said, and the new drive will appear in My Computer - probably as E:, or F:.

It won't boot from it usually unless you either a) switch the two drives around, or b) edit the bootloader so it boots XP instead - something which you can't do by accident, so don't worry about messing anything up in Windows 7.
