FMod
You do know that the HD 7900 series (AMD) through present, and the Gtx 600 series (Nvidia) through present, will be getting Dx 12 support? You should read the whole thread; we've just discussed it on page 1. Partial support - most new features will still require new hardware. The one promised to be supported is not even user-oriented, but only concerns how calls through the WDDM stack are made, it's completely black-boxed and invisible to the end user. Basically, all this means is that DX12 games won't require two completely separate renderers like DX9 and DX11 renderers in modern games... well, it will require separate DX9 and DX12 renderers, if you want to support hardware older than GCN, but at least not three, DX9, DX11 and DX12

It took DX11 awhile before it became better. By then, I'll have a new card anyways. Plus, all gaming evolved titles will have mantle.
FMod
On the other hand, it took DX9 and even its minor update DX9.0c only months.I very distinctly remember cursing as I had to decide whether to sell a card with just a couple months on it - the games I wanted relied on SM3 and DX9.0c. And it's not even like the new card was faster; worse, after I did get a good price on the old card and made the switch, I regretted it as in addition to being slower the new card had visibly worse image quality wherever SM3 was not involved. We don't know in advance.DX10's uptake was nonexistent because everyone stuck with XP over Vista, and because of previous-generation DX9 max consoles. DX11's uptake was moderate because you could only use it on PC exclusives, and you needed to make a completely separate renderer and extra assets from scratch for that small small portion of gamers who had a PC and had already traded XP for 7 and had a DX11 card and actually cared. There are no such issues regarding DX12; while it will never be supported on W7, it will be on consoles from day one, it may be on W8.?, and W8's uptake is nowhere as bad as Vista's anyway. It also won't require a totally separate renderer if developers won't use a lot of direct-to-metal features, and just because of that many won't. It will all come down to how much DX12 will offer in terms of new features. It may be a fizzle of stuff no one bothers to use, or it can be a quantum leap in CPU-GPGPU-GPU pipeline integration. Current generation console hardware (which is ahead of current generation consumer video cards) potentially allows for the latter.
