bben46
The Bethesda installer for FO3 uses the Windows registry to tell it where things are located. Unfortunately, MS has never seen fit to bother fixing the move a program to include making the Required changes in the registry. So , you cannot just move a program, you must reinstall it to the new location - and even then it tends to leave old registry entries behind to cause problems. First, you will need a good registry cleaner - I use Ccleaner, but nearly any will work - be sure to read all the documentation before using it - and have all of your passwords backed up somewhere as it may remove them also. 1. Rename your data folder and save game folder. And if you have a custom ini. rename that also.2. Copy that renamed data folder, the saved game folder and the ini file to a new location outside of the Bethesda folder. I like to make a new folder for this, and include the date - such as C:\Games\Backup_FO3_6-5-20143. Run the Fallout3 uninstall from the CD4. Delete all of the remaining FO3 folders5. Reboot your computer ( this is important) - This flags the registry entries for removal6. Run the registry cleaner - you only need the registry cleaner part. ( this removes all of the left over registry entries)7. Reboot again ( important) - this allows windows to do some housecleaning and fill in the gaps in the registry left by the removed entries8. Reinstall the game in the new location where you want it.9. Start the game and make a save ( important)10. Now, copy your custom ini back - and TEST it11. Rename the NEW data folder ( this is now a backup vanilla data folder) you can also move it somewhere else to get it out of the way12. Copy the original renamed data folder into the Fallout 3 folder - rename it back to DATA13. Copy the original save games folder back and allow it to overwrite the new one ( the new one only has those saves you made while installing & testing anyway)This sounds like a lot of work, But now, you have the game in a new location with all of your old mods and saves.
