Proper Etiquette on Modding

I have been working on my collection of mods that I picked up here. I hit the 250+ limit and started to merge them together to be able to use them all. I am not done yet but, when I complete the process, I will be at roughly 300 mods combined into a shorter collection of mods (about 10-20). I am also going through the NIF and DDS files and, for those that are identical, combining the links so there is only one copy of the file necessary to reduce disk space usage. I am, essentially, bashing all these files together and making sure compatibility is not an issue.

 

I recognize no DLC works can be legally shared (so Knights.esp, DLCShiveringIsles.esp, and their associated BSA files won't be in the mod, although it will require the files) but the rest of it is all from TesNexus. I fully intend on listing ALL the mods within the files, even though I have forgotten from whom I have gotten most of them. I will list what I can remember or rediscover.

 

Some people may not appreciate the merging of their mods with others, but this is being put together more for people who want to play a large amount of mods but don't have the skill or experience necessary to merge large numbers of mods together. I didn't ask anyone's permission to do this, obviously. Therein lies my question:

 

Once I complete all this work, what is the etiquette on sharing it? What are the TesNexus rules on sharing mods whose original creators/designers might take issue with their mods being combined in this fashion?

The problem is that you need to have permission to re-upload those mods as if you don't...you may not.

Some file-owners might refuse because you would force them to be compatible. Although it's a nice gesture :), if you have 1 merge you also have a lot of mods someone doesn't like or doesn't need. Getting a list of mods merged that's able to upload is gonna be a tough one ;).

For the most part, all merged mods are for personal use only. Some authors get rather particular about having their work re-uploaded and merged with other mods as they feel it reduces the popularity of their own mods. Furthermore, merging mods and releasing them, even resources, can have significant problems if the original mod gets updated, or isn't merged correctly.

 

If you really want to try cleaning things up, you should get specific permission from all of the mod authors granting permission to re-upload their work and their resources within a compilation before doing anything.

This is a great (and spectacularly helpful, I might add) undertaking you are going for here matey, but mods are freeware. Generally, whilst that means you can use the files, you need the owners permissions to upload said files. Or at least to be able to proove you've reasonably attempted to gain said permissions as obviously not every modder will be able/willing to respond, some will have moved on to other things, and others will just be reluctant to have anyone else claiming credit for all or part of their works. All of this I can understand fully, even though I'm not a "public" modder myself; I lack the imagination and I'm a bloody godawful perfectionist, so nothing I do, whilst I can use it myself, ever seems to me to be quite good enough for public release.

Anyways, back to the point; Its my understanding from things I've seen and read here on the Nexus, that if you upload any or part of anyone elses work and they have not specifically stated you can in the read-me/mod documentation, your mods will be removed from the site.

Plus, whilst most other modders wouldn't take issue with you using their stuff, they would likely (and rightly) expect credit for their work, and if you don't know who made the stuff in the first place, you can't really credit them for it, can you.

Getting permission, making sure everything's compatible, incorporating updates - it's going to be a lot of work. And people are not likely to have the exact same preferences as you, so they're also unlikely to download such a thing.

 

Writing a tutorial on how to properly merge mods would probably be more beneficial to the community.

 

 

Nevertheless, if you think it's worth uploading for the select group of people that will like it, good luck. :)

Here is the list I compiled a few days ago of the ESP files in my Data directory I intend on merging. A few more have been added since then relating to races.

 

Some won't make it into the final ESP mods I am making. Knights and Shivering Isles, because of legal issues. OOO, because of certain dependencies, will not be merged. All the patches for the other mods will be merged into appropriate mods to be loaded after their main file in the load order. Some files will be removed from this list as they are discovered to be redundant (I am thinking several of the M.O.E. mods, really, have been made obsolete).

 

The end result will be a series of mod patches loaded in a specific order that will eliminate the need for bashed patches (which is good as, for some reason, my Wyre Bash refuses to work any more). The big core mods will still need to be loaded, but their related patches won't need to be loaded as dozens of extra files, each requiring various bash patches, etc. This should result in a load order consisting of perhaps 20-30 files, instead of the 300-or-so I have now.
