Character Editor

First off, I know that you can use "showmenuclass" and "showmenubirthsign" to edit your character's stats and class within the game. I don't like the fact that you can't change one skill (from your original character setup) and keep the rest of the skill points the same. For example, I tried to remove a major skill that I use a lot (light armor) with a skill that I don't use often at all (like alteration), so that I can level a bit more slowly and evenly. However, once I changed that one skill most all of my skill points were reset from their original values, and it just made a mess of my character. I don't want to completely start over, or have to apply leveling mods to get the game how I want it to be.

We need a mod that allows us to externally (out of the game) edit our save files/characters properly. What I mean is, I want to be able to edit a single value or skill and not effect anything else. Much like how gatekeeper for Baldurs Gate worked; you can edit anything to what you like and not mess up your character (gatekeeper: http://www.mud-master.com/shadowkeeper/ ).

I really hope this is possible to make, it would really better my Oblivion experience.

That is a good idea. Have one NPC in the game that, for a price, will take you back to the character creation screen and allow you to change certain things about your character.

For instance: Hair and Beard styles, as well as Class and Attributes.

This would add a level of realism to the game because in reality one could change his or her look and their job. It would also bring a little more fun into the game. It is a real drag when you have to start over if you don't like something about or are simply getting bored with a character. Good thinkin KevanB. 8)

I was thinking more along the lines of a seperate program, that one would use outside of the game to edit their character however they want. Full editing and control would be the goal here, however an NPC that does the same would be great as well! That would make it seem less like "cheating" and more along the lines of a realistic RPG feature.

However, if one were to script a NPC to (for a price) take us back to the creation screen some problems will occur. I have tried using "showmenuclass", which is the class selection menu, to try and edit my characters skills a bit. I successfully changed a few skills, but the point values become skewed from what they originally were. For example, before I changed my major skill light armor with a minor skill of alteration, my sneak was 60. After I changed that ONE skill, my sneak was 37. Almost all of the attributes are effected by changing just one skill, which makes sense. The system just can't account for how you leveled up and allocated skill points and attributes before the editing takes place. There may be a way around this by coding it differently. But just implementing the "showmenuclass" command into an NPC will not work. Perhaps implementing the whole original character creation screen doesn't have issues, so that may be worth a try.

If anyone is willing to help, give suggestions or comments, please do!

Yeah, I agree with you. I understand that it would be a logistical nightmare to turn my idea into a mod; it would be more of a job for Bethesda. Your idea would be easier to mod. Although, my idea would be realistic in that they didn't have plastic surgeons in ancient times so one shouldn't be able to alter their face, just their hair, skills and class. That was the point I was making. :)

Perhaps all we need is a program that can effeciently edit the "LevelUpData_1" file that is located in the Oblivion install directory. It seems as if it contains all the save file's stat's for leveling up, but only the major skills. Maybe it will only be possible to edit the major skills.

Any input on this?

Maybe it could be possible to somehow save the character's stats before going to the race/class/whatever screen and after it reapply them with player.setAV <skill> <value>.

Only full skillvalues are possible there, so they would have to be rounded up/down.

That would be some workaround (can be done manually too) for changing the character ingame and whenever one pleases.

I'm always using that method when I change something with my characters.
