Old Fox - Hello!

"I have GOTY Fallout through Steam. Should I install the 1.7 patch from Steam"

The GOTY version of Fallout 3 is already the latest version & does not need the Official patches.

GOTY is version 1.7.0.3, the very latest.

You can see Fallout 3's version by going to the main menu, selecting Settings - Display & it will be in the bottom left corner.

"or the Unofficial Fallout 3 patch through NMM or both?"

The Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch (UF3P) fixes things not covered by the Official patches, basically a lot of things that got left unfixed.

The Official patches concentrate on really game breaking bugs but miss out fixing many other issues.

You don't strictly need the Unofficial Patch but it will correct a lot of details like textures, meshes, quests & various other things all listed in it's Change Log.

I wouldn't be without it.

The UF3P has only one real bug, the crash on saves around Project Purity/Rivet City when using the UF3P's Broken Steel plugin.

That's easily fixed with this guide:

http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?showtopic=401813

Or there's the Updated Unofficial Patch with that bug already fixed as well as including new fixes here:

http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/19122/?tab=3&navtag=%2Fajax%2Fmodimages%2F%3Fid%3D19122%26user%3D1&pUp=1

"through NMM"

Note that the original UF3P can't be installed through a mod manager as is because it's an .exe, you manually download & run it.

There is a method for manually installing it if you don't like .exe's here:

I think the UPDATED Unofficial Patch has a Mod Manager friendly version.

Hope this helps!

Thank you very much prensa. I was leaning that direction anyway. Before I go, do you prefer FOMM over NMM? I had a lot of trouble with FOMM. I think lack of documentation factored into that. I would be interested in your opinion.

Old Fox - Hello!

"Before I go, do you prefer FOMM over NMM?"

I've never used NMM, FOMM came first & it's always worked perfectly for me so I've never changed.

I even still use "Old" FOMM since I don't have New Vegas thus don't need the dual functionality of "New" FOMM.

"I had a lot of trouble with FOMM."

FOMM's never given me any trouble, it also has several handy tools built into it like BSA unpacker that I use to unpack textures & meshes.

Though I've never used NMM it's based off of FOMM in how it works, both have built in archive invalidation & both allow load orders to easily be moved about.

NMM's main feature that it has over FOMM is it's synching up with the Nexus & ability to direct download (compatible) mods & work with the different version of the Nexus.

"I think lack of documentation factored into that."

Well in "Old" FOMM you can select from the top "Help" - "View Readme" & up will pop an interactive help window.

Though it's pretty straight forward & I must admit to almost never having read the Readme. :)

Worth mentioning that I also don't use the built in archive invalidation in FOMM as I find that the stand alone "ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated" tool is better in that it never needs to be messed with again once activated. Both NMM & FOMM's built in archive invalidation often needs to be toggled off & back on again when a new mod is installed.

ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated can be found here:

http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/944/?

Just make sure to only use one version of archive invalidation, either stand alone OR built in mod manager version, as using both can cancel each other out.

Hope this helps!
