jryan388
So, I installed BC and it dropped my fps from 45ish to 20ish. I know its a tough mod to run, but my question is what is the bottleneck in my system? It can't be my system ram (2gb, win 7) cause it's only at like 70% while playing oblivionIt can't be my cpu (3.4ghz athlon ii x2) cause it never even reaches 90% load while playing. It can't be my video card (radeon 5750 oc @ 800mhz) cause neither installing QTP3 nor screen resolutions make any major difference in fps (maybe 1-2 fps). Basically same fps at 1280 x 1024 and 640 x 480. The only thing that really improves my fps so far is sliding down the object view distance bar thingy in the menu, but then I can't see buildings very far. (This does really help though, I can get it past 25 if I slide it down far enough). So my question is, how can I improve performance without sacrificing on quality? Another interesting thing is when I toggle debug text 13 it has a thingy called "queued mem" and when it gets to 30kb+ my comp runs really slow. For some reason this heavily affects my fps outdoors and inside buildings (I have been in a small shop when my fps dropped to 15ish). What is "queued mem"? I don't know what queued mem is, but the problem with the Better mods seems to be that there are so many people. I don't think the Oblivion AIs are streamlined enough for the game to handle 20+ NPCs. My solution? I killed off some guards ;p (I just used the console, entered the "kill" command). It may be the processor that is not strong enough. Look mainly at the section that tells about multithreading. Although Oblivion is not optimized to multicores CPUs it can use it with benefits. Levgre may have hit the target when pointing out the increased AIs running together. Yours seems to be more a CPU issue than graphical board. I agree your's is a fast CPU but yet is a dual core and phenom does not have multithreading feature per core like the newer Intel's. Try a mod named "Quiet feet", there is a good chance your main issue is with sound instead video. You can even test it disabling the sound and music in the Oblivion.ini file (just to test, return them to 1 afterwards). That is specially true if you uses onboard sound. Finally, don't be too fixed with FPS, Oblivion is not a First Person Shooter game. It's very playable if you get above and around 20 FPS. A final word, make sure you have the vertical sync disabled or at least have the triple buffering enabled if not, vsync is known to cut your frame rate in half when the high can't be achieved.
