Retexturing Armor And Items

I'm a little new to the texturing thing with Oblivion...but I'd like to start devoting time to learning how to retexture armor, or simply even changing it's colour. I was just wondering if anybody could tell me what the best program for that would be? I've heard about 3DSMAX, but don't know if I can just retexture/recolour items with it. Any responce would be great appreciated. Thanks tons!

As far i kno, youd need a painting tool, and a dds format converter. Or both in one.

Then try converting those mods which you found working for you ,to see if your tools work.

Just tried that, and that worked for me. But that I was only able to do that with mods I had dled that had .dds files for me to work with. What I had more in mind was working with the actual files that came with Oblivion, but they're all packed in like .bsa formats...I didn't know if 3DSMax would be able to view those or not. Any other help is still greatly appreciated!

Yeah, i want to recolour a few of the Armors and Weapons too, but don't have a Tool to extract the Files from the .bsa Files, where can i get one for that? :) I got a lot of modelling Tools, like 3DSMAX, GMAX... :)
