Games without controllers..

The only "game" I can see this Natal working for is Second Life. But I'm a pessimist.

Still, you give more credit than I do, as I don't even consider Second Life to be a game.

I really hate to use movies as an example when talking about games, but in this case it seems appropriate. Controller-less games are going to suffer the same initial problem(s) as 3D movies: for the first few years they're going to suck so horrifically bad that no one will take them seriously, then one day some big game company will figure out how to make a game so graphically pretty and so easy to control that everyone will be mesmerized to the point that they do not admit the game itself still sucks (yes that's a jab at Avatar).

As the saying goes, "a turd dipped in perfume and sprinkled with glitter, is still a turd."

But the financial success of the really pretty, horrifically bad controller-less game will be enough for the novelty to take a solid footing and all the few game companies we actually love will start making their games controller-less too. With any luck, I'll be dead of old age by then.

On a positive note, the one thing this idea has going for it is integration. The most apparent thing about all consoles is that you know who has one because you see the controllers either sprawled out on the carpet, tossed into a corner, or lumped on the shelf. Even with cordless controls, it's just this extra bit of clutter that you're constantly pushing around and trying to hide when you have guests over who aren't gamers.

The downside however is the loss of tactile sensation related to the controls, and the fact that you look like a retard while playing the game if someone doesn't recognize that you're playing a game.

Without focusing on "mind control" and all these sci-fi things, what can it be like? I mean playing without controllers. Perhaps a game character will repeat player's action. In this case player needs lots of space to move :) and he will look like an idiot running around and interacting with non-existent objects. Relatives may call for emergency aid if they don't understand:)
