Open existing custom item

I downloaded a custom item set from the nexus and I was wondering how I can open that mod to use for reference in creating my own custom weapons.

I'm completely lost with this editor, I cant even figure out how to open my own character's stats/inventory. I'm too used to oblivion and fallout, so this this a crazy change as far as tool sets go. So maybe just direct me towards some threads/tutorials that would aid me in this objective. Thanks in advance.

Ok, well let me be more specific...

Ecbricco released a weapon/armor set called "Sythilus rogue weapon and armor set" on the nexus, I liked the idea, but wanted to create my own. Im having trouble recreating the poison and ice aura that he gave the weapons. I just want to know how to either open his mod to find out, or if someone can tell me how to add the aura's that would be great too.

dragon age wiki has some tuts on how to create custom weapons, along with some other tutorials for other stuff.

I'm still tryin to figure out how to get those files to modify also, so afraid that I can't help you there. I know that with custom cutscenes, they CANT be redone or changed. Dunno if its the same with weapons/armor. Trying it myself, cause I wanna remove a class restriction on a really cool looking set of armor!

what I can tell you tho, is if you are making an all new weapon, once you get it started, you'll see an area that reads ATTRIBUTES (not in caps) and under that section you'll see a line that says PROPERTIES (again, not in caps.)

By clicking on Properties, you'll see a box with three ... (dots) in it. click that box, and you get options. click the option that you want, then click ADD. THATS where you find that stuff for the aura's and the effects that go with them. scrolll thru the list till you see COLD FX that SHOULD be what gives it the freezing, misty affect.

for the poison, you're gonna have to go down one line lower, to where it says ONHIT EFFECT. click on (NONE) then open the drop box. Scroll thru that list, and you will find a bunch of different levels of poison. They're listed in aphabetical order, and Im afraid that I dont know which levels do more damage than others.

Thats about as far as I've gotten so far tho just tinkering around with it. I do know that when you go to send it to the game, you do a File\ EXPORT, export without dependancies.
