chunlix
When I open up the GECK, even before I get to select which data files to work with, the following happens (after the splash screen goes away) http://i49.tinypic.com/f074z.jpg Then after I click yes on all of them, if I load up any data files such as fallout3.esm or anything else, geck crashes and windows asks if I want to send a report. This only started right now. Yesterday it was working just fine, then suddenly while working on a mod I wasn't able to open up any objects from the geck (double click on a weapon or NPC for example and nothing would happen, or in some cases a window opened up but with no data inside it). After that happened I restarted my computer and from then on I've been having the problem described above. I'm running on XP Pro SP3. Never had any issues with geck or FO3 before this. FO3 is still 100% playable, no issues, as are all of the .esp or .esm files I load into it. Any help would be appreciated.
mechine
heh I'd un-install the GECK, then download it again, an download the update for it too. I install the GECK in the fallout 3 folder (you know the one that has the data folder in it) Something like C:/bethesda softworks/fallout3 Which the default path for the game an GECk is C:/program files/bethesdsa softworks/fallout 3 But most of the players move it to it's own folder, from some old problems we used to have from the default path. Now depending on where you deside to install fallout, you install the GECK to there, then you can just drag an drop the GECK update into that same folder an run the update. I have Fallout installed at D:/bethesda softworks/fallout 3 which I put the geck there too, but when I ran the update from C:/desktop, the update wouldn't see that I had GECK installed on D:/ hence why you drag an drop it into the fallout folder. But we have avoided finding out what caused the problem from re-installing. So it may be the case that you need to fool around with things. The GECK uses two notepad .ini config files, just like the ones that we tweek for fallout, which both should be located together, and are created when you first launch the program after you install. Most folks have found you can delete the whole folder located at /mydocuments/Games/fallout3 or just the .ini config files, then launch the program an it will rebuild the config files as it launches. Which I've heard that a few wierd problems were fixed when the player just deleted the whole folder at my documents/games/fallout3 then forced a rebuild of those files. It is a risk though, what if for one reason or another the files don't rebuild. Well you would just have to re-install to get them back. But I've never had a problem with removing them. I just move them to another location. Like I have a folder just for poop that I download, well I moved the my documents/games/fallout 3 folder over to the download folder (so the game wouldn't use it) an now had a backup copy if it didn't rebuild when I launched GECK or fallout. You could have something messed up in the registry for some reason, which is pretty common for gamers. You really need a program like norton to clean it or one that's just a reg cleaner. You can go to run an type regedit or something like that an view the registry, but it's freaking huge, an really you have to use Ctrl F to find anything, even if you find it most of us won't understand what's in there anyway. hence the need for a cleaner. Then most PC folks will clean out their temporary folders every so often, which norton will do as well, because it's not easy to find all the temporary folders inside the windows folder. You can find the prefetch folder, which is located in C:/Windows (but don't ever open C:/windows unless you know what you are doing) All you would do is find the prefetch folder, open it, click somewhere in there, an Ctrl A to select all, then delete, then clean out the rcyl bin, reboot. You should probably clean out the temporary internet files every day or every few days, then the prefetch you don't clean out as much as that, maybe once a week or once in two weeks. You can't really mess anything up from purging it. All it does is speeds up the launch of programs in the interface. When I first get the GECK I set the window size on it maximized, an then hit X to close it, this saves those setting so that it opens up the same way each time, but depending, something you changed in settings while in the geck in order to do this or that could have caused your problem, an also maybe something you did to the fallout data folder itself could have, or you know it could be some other program which messed it up, or even corupted data, which is why I figured re-installing would be the easy way to fix it. Most of us get a whole bunch of errors from the GECK, which get ignored most of the time. Just because GECK says it's in error, doesn't mean that it won't work correctly in-game, which is why we ignore it for the most part. While the GECK will autofix things if they are messed up, like as mentioned durring the FO3edit master update process, it's a risk to fix it that way, so you either take it or go find someone to fix. The only real use for the GECK errors I've found was that master update auto fix thing, an then like if I make a whole bunch of new items an I want to check if everything got mip-maps or normals applied to it for performance reasons. Then it will give a error if you mess up the triangles on a navmesh, but you shouldn't have that problem if you make them well.
