a simpler step by step?

As someone with little to no experience with things like RAR files, unzipping things or any of that, I'm really not certain how I'm supposed to go about installing a mod. Do I save it or open it with a program, and why do I keep getting told the file I've downloaded is missing the correct file extension? I've checked out a couple of the tutorials on nexus but I'm still sort of lost on how to do it, especially the first few steps. Is there a better tutorial anywhere?

Most decent mods will have a readme with instructions on how to install it. Usually, but not always, you will want to extract the files to your \Data\ folder. The key feature is to retain the same folder structure that Fallout already uses. That means textures will be under \Data\textures\ and meshes will be under \Data\meshes and ESPs & ESMs should be under \Data\.

Anyway...

1. you need wirar or 7-zip (for extraction) Link - 7-Zip Archive Utility

2. extract meshes, textures folder, esp and whatever other folders or files it may have into fallout 3/data folder.

(if asked to replace click yes to all)

Also you will need to toggle archive invalidation... Three ways to do that

1. Install fallout mod manager and use toggle invalidation buttton (link)-> Fallout mod manager

2. Download extract and activate (link)-> ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated

3. do it manually
