My four rules for stuff getting invented or discovered:

The chinese did it first (or so they say).

The arab nations did it in the dark ages but get no credit.

The scottish did it unless that thing is seen as stereotypically scottish.

The greeks did it, but were too busy contemplating their navels and forgot about it.
