Mouse Sensitivity

I have a trackball mouse. My computer doesn't have any problems running Oblivion, except this mouse thing. It's slow, no matter what! I mean, I've gotten used to it, but it seems like it's weighted down and it takes a while to turn in battle or look around or click on dialogue sometimes. I have Mouse Sensitivity set to max, and it helps, but it's still very weighted.

I also have a problem with lockpicking and the mouse. The cursor skips around sometimes and makes it push up the wrong tumbler or will switch tumblers halfway through a pick.

It's a good trackball mouse, fairly new and I clean it often. I don't have cursor skipping problems or any sensitivity issues outside of the game. I only have this problem in this game, so I don't think it's a bad mouse.

How can I make my mouse more sensitive in Oblivion?

If nothing else, I mean, I can live with it. It's just annoying. 8)

Hey there, dont wanna dig up old posts, but no-one has replied.

I've been messing around trying to get te most out of my oblivion. I noted the same thing with my normal mouse when i turned "vsync" off. When you launch oblivion it comes up with a menu. At the top you click "play" to play.. rather click "options" and make sure vsync is checked, it must be on. Try play it then. If it's still slow try turning down your graphics. If it still slow after than, i would advise updating your trackball's driver. Best advise i can give you. Hope it helps!

Thanks to both of you for the suggestions!

Unfortunately neither solution works for me.

The first solution with vsync - I already have vsync on, but I tried it both ways just to be sure. It's slower with vsync off, but still somewhat laggy with vsync on.

In your oblivion.ini, try setting

bBackground Mouse=0

to

bBackground Mouse=1

remember to back up your oblivion.ini before you do this, in case it doesn't help!

With this, I changed: bBackground Mouse=0 to bBackground Mouse=1 and it made a duplicate mouse cursor that would appear and kick me to the desktop & minimize the game.

I was told to maybe check into the Bloom effects since I notice the slight lag mostly when I'm in the persuasion speechcraft wheel. So I'll check bloom effects next.. Hopefully it will work, I'll post if it does.

Thanks for the replies & solutions though! 8)

The duplicate-mouse-cursor-boot-to-desktop would happen if I tried to alt-tab out of the game then get back to it again. I do NOT recommend doing this to the game, as it will seriously screw it up and cause all sorts of obnoxious mouse problems. While it's a PITA, I recommend exiting the game before you need to do other things on your computer. Consider it an immersive experience.

The reason I suggest bBackground Mouse=1 is because that puts the mouse callback routine on a separate thread (to use some programming lingo). In plain english, that means if you have a dual-core or hyperthreading processor, it will handle the mouse with spare CPU cycles while the main CPU handles the graphics, AI, and physics. That should make the game more responsive. I'm pretty sure Bethesda put this to zero because most people have single-core processors, the processors don't have hyperthreading, or hyperthread has been turned off (you can turn on hyperthreading in your computer's bios. This will help in everything, not just Oblivion).

If you don't have hyperthreading (it's on newer Pentium 4) or dual core (on Pentium Xeon, Ahtlon 64 X2, Opteron, Pentium Duo), bBackground Mouse=1 might cause problems when you get below 10 FPS.

Bloom should not affect the persuasion wheel... If anything when you're in dialog mode you should be getting 10-20 FPS more than when in non-dialog mode.

Here's another suggestion: try setting bUse Joystick=0 in oblivion.ini. This may prevent the joystick (if you have one) from interfering with the mouse and keyboard, and will boost performane a teensy bit. I would turn it off anyway even if you don't have one, and never plan on installing one.

  • 3 weeks later...

Have you tried to increase the sensitivity of the mouse in the game settings?

I have a wireless trackball mouse, and I had to increase the sensitivity setting.Which is odd, because in most games I have to turn it down.
