phawk69
Actually, I just like asking questions ;D But more to the point, I know a barter system can work in a small environment - ie a community setting, but getting it to work on a global scale - wow. What is the incentive for the farmers in Saskatchewan to continue trying to grow bumper crops every year? I realize they would need to barter for machinery and fuel to run the same, but what motivates them to continue farming 4 sections of land or more? You can scale back the economy, but now you don't have the huge surplusses either, so now somebody does without. I just don't see it working globally, and if the system can't, then it can't work as Peregrine pointed out (not that I agree with all his agruments, but he does argue well :) )

VladimIr V Y
Enslavement doesn't work well as a uniting force. It's true. But both right and left political movements usually end by this too. Both Communist's Party in Soviet Unuon on the left side and corporations on the right side used or use now some form of enslavement. Simple personal or much more clever and invisible economical enslavement.Either way one larger group of people become dependant on decisions and actions of smaller group of people. Uniting world now will just optimise expenses. There will be no need for an army. Military expenditures are roughly 2% of gross world product by 1999 year. That amount of money can feed all starving peoples.
Marxist ßastard
But both right and left political movements usually end by this too. These other political movements don't cite "uniting the people" as their sole motivating principle. In fact, many popular governments were constructed with fallibility foremost in mind, which runs in direct opposition to your ideal of a "one-world" utopia -- and let me remind you that your political stance simply will not achieve this, given any length of time. Yes, they do not unite people. They separate them for ease of enslavement. It is easy to manipulate country what cannot do anything on it's own and depend on foreign credits and resoucres. On other hand - try to manupulate China, which stands firmly as one. The outcome will quite negative. ...And that amount will increase a thousandfold if you need to silence any and all voices of dissent within a population of seven billion and counting. If the world is conquested - surely. But I suggesting a peacefull union, not one done by the sword and fire. Something like EU, but on word-wide scale. Or maybe - each country become a state, like in US. One ruling body(UN comes in mind), each state makes there own laws. And there is no borders. One world offers much personal freedom. More than anyone have today. A freedom of movement, for example. Right now it is quite limited. One can freely move in own country, but if he intend to leave it - he need a lot of paperwork done. I can change my beliefs, but only if other options will be good. Right now world is rapidly moving towards dead end. Maybe even literaly dead. Racism? Why? There will be less racism. Differences between humans will decrease. Right now I can say "I'm russian, and you are american", but in one world only thing I can say "We are the peoples of Earth". Same thing will be with races. Eventually, they will mix together.
Marxist ßastard
"We are the peoples of Earth". "I am Zoltar, of the media sector of the New One World Planet Spaceship Earth Economy (United States). Kashyyk of the assembly line sector of the New One World Planet Spaceship Earth Economy (South America), do my dishes, or I will call in a security guard from the defense sector of the New One World Planet Spaceship Earth Economy (Africa)... To destroy you! Mua-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!" (If your argument can read like the plot of bad sci-fi, so can my rebuttal.)

I think what he's trying to say is "We are all citizens of the world" i.e. international barriers will come down as - alledgedly - they have in Europe, and people will gradually place less importance in their sense of national heritage, and begin to feel more as one with other nations. I, for example have for many years considered myself "European" as opposed to British or Spanish, in part because I do not feel that my personality and way of thinking coincide directly with either. )Incidentally, this is why I STILL haven't voted on this forum, as I have yet to be convinced that any of these 'labels' actually apply to me.) I am proud of certain aspects of my heritage and (somewhat mixed) culture, but other facets of them disgust me. True global unity is surely an unattainable utopia, but I would like to think that the world will one day consist of people of like minds, rather than being cast together due to nationality. In summary, Marxist ßastard, I think you misunderstood to some extent the message that Vladimir tried to convey with that statement, and I must say that if you are as much of a ßastard I mean Marxist ;) as your username implies, Vlad's views are probably not too far from those of your own..........
