Help for the Perplexed?

The purpose of this excellent Nexus site is to help gamers enjoy Oblivion more, but as of today there are 27,256 mods available for Oblivion. That is a lot. Where to start? How to find mods you want to use?

For example, many players would, I imagine, like to add a residence for their character—but there are 1,668 “abodes”—55 pages of them—available on Nexus.

Should something be done to make newcomers aware of the most significant mods? Perhaps there could be a list of mods (by category) that have a certain number of downloads or endorsements—I’m not sure what a good number would be—so beginners could look first at the most popular, successful, trouble-free mods.

I just want to put this dilemma before the experienced gurus here. I realize that Oblivion is an “old” game now—not to me, who played Arena and Daggerfall when they first came out, but to younger gamers—and that many of those who still find Oblivion worth spending time with are those who are also very knowledgeable about the mods, having seen them as they gradually appeared. But what if anything can be done to assist newcomers to easily find a few good mods they will enjoy without attempting the impossible task of reviewing over 27,000 offerings?

That's what "Sort by endorsements" is for when browsing categories, I suppose, or the many different lists under "Top Files".

I personally won't be using them, as endorsements and popularity represent neither of what you described, but I welcome them for those people who believe they do.

The challenge with your question here is that every single person has a somewhat different idea of what makes a mod "significant", "good", "great", "must have". Searching through using "Top" lists, "Most Endorsed" or whatever other filter you can think of will save time. But there are many great mods out there that don't populate these lists. Using your example of player homes... by all means use the popular mods to get started. But I strongly suggest taking the time to browse through all of them at some point. There are many hidden gems you will miss out on otherwise.

Why 'delete'? There may be others not knowing it as well, as not everything about the Nexus features is already well-known throughout the community, and now those can find the topic and read about it as well.

We'll just let it sink down until it disappears. Every topic serves a purpose, and if it's only to let others profit from OP's own mistakes and realizations. It is a community which learns from itself.
