As you are installing from a disk, you should not have to shut down any firewall or antivirus. In fact it is not a good idea to do so as it takes very little time for a virus or other malware to find an unprotected computer and take it over. Running slow is usually one of the indications you have been infected. The first thing many viruses (viri?) do is to either block or modify any antivirus you have - try to do an update on your antivirus - if it has been more than 24 hours since the last update, and you get a message saying there are no new updates you are probably already infected. Viruses also try to block access to common antivirus sites, or redirect you to a bogus site. Since your system is new you may want to consider a reformat (If you actually have a system disk)

Here is a link to a clean site that has a lot of help for removing virus and other malware: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

Now, install Oblivion

DO NOT install Oblivion in the default recommended location. Oblivion was released before Vista (and Win7)came out with it's UAC protected 'program folders' and does not take that into account when it installs.

Instead, make a new folder, name it Games. then in that one make a subfolder name it Oblivion.

Now install the game in the C:\Games\Oblivion folder. That puts it in a place where it will not be limited by the UAC protections.

The internet security settings cannot block an install from a disk.

The disk install does not pass through their security at all.

It may be something else trying to install over the internet that was blocked.

A virus already on your system may try to get you to turn off the security settings to allow it to call home. Or turn them off itself.

UAC protects important files in the program folders from being changed by a drive by install from the internet. (Unless you click to allow the change) By disabling UAC you leave those files open to the first virus that manages to get by the firewall.

One of the first things a virus does is make changes to your system files to allow it to bypass your firewall and antivirus program.

Any time the computer is tied up searching your system for something to steal or uploading all of your financial info to some low life data thief it will cause everything else to run slow.

That is why I suggested checking for viruses.

That might mean my disc is infected its only slow when on the disc if i have the disc in my drive can i scan it with an anti virus program

EDIT: THANK YOU I scanned the disc there were NO viruses found, but now it works THANK YOU!

That's interesting. No viruses is a good thing. But just scanning should have nothing to do with disk access.

Possible reason: a dirty read LED in the disk drive. Something like a piece of lint on the lens that finally broke loose allowing it to work properly again?

Whatever the problem was I'm glad to see it resolved. Now get out there and kill some goblins.
