Problem Getting Head to Sync with Torso on New PCS

Recommended Posts

Hi. I've been trying to use GECK to create new NPCs to inhabit various cells, but I keep running into a problem. Whether or not I'm creating a new NPC off of a template or not, I cannot get their body/torso skin to sync up with their head. For instance, if I want to create an African American male, I can get the head to display the African American skin (or African American Raider, or Asian Raider, etc, etc), but I cannot get the body to change from Caucasian. I don't seem to have any way of changing the torso's race/skin whatsoever. Even if the head's race/skin is the same as the torso's, if I change the skin tone at all, it only effects the head.

I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, or if this is a glitch. Please help!

You need to make your plugin an esm (master). It is a bug introduced by one of the patches

In the future please use the search function, it's a very common problem.

Thanks for your prompt response, Quetzlsacatanango. Very helpful. I would have used the search function, but I wasn't quite sure what to search for (new to modding). If there's an old thread, maybe you could direct me to it, or give me the thread title.

Edit: Just did a few searches trying to find a thread that might teach me how to change my .esp to an .esm, but couldn't find anything directly related.

There are actually two fixes to that problem. One has already been stated, the other can be achieved by checking the 'Can be all Races" flag on the NPC data page. I have seen both work for different cases of the same issue.

To change your ESP into an ESM, you'll need a utility like FO3Edit and the FO3Edit manual.

Basically, once you load your mod into FO3Edit, you will have to edit the 'header' record and then 'flags' field and check the box next to 'ESM'. Then exit out of FO3Edit. Just do the reverse to turn your mod back into an ESP (remove the ESM flag). Why would you want to turn your mod back into an ESP, you might ask? Becasue you can't modify an ESM with the Geck. So most of us (well, me at least) just live with the problem until release time and then turn the mod into an ESM before uploading it. I then immedaitely turn the mod back into an ESP so I can modify it further for the next release.

When I check the 'Can be all Races' flag, should this instantaneously transform the preview image, or would I have to save the esp/esm and reload it? Just checking the flag doesn't change anything in any obvious way when I do so.

If you load a cell where the NPC can be seen, you would notice the change right away. You can also press F5 to reload a loaded cell. I don't know how the preview window would respond. For my case of the mismatched face/body issue, the Can Be All Races flag did not resolve the issue. Its an either or thing. If one solution doesn't fix it the other will. So I would go with changing your mod to an ESM. I suppose FO3 Pluggin is easier to use, but I also don't use that in favor of the more powerful FO3Edit. But if all you want to do is change the ESM flag, then FO3 Pluggin is the way to go. FO3Edit just has a lot more in-depth features that I use all the time, so I have never installed FO3 Pluggin.

Good Luck.
