Really strange bug. Require assistance.

To note: I used NMM to install the mods.

Just the other day I reinstalled Fallout New Vegas and a bunch of mods, and it worked perfectly fine, new game character and everything ran smooth, in game menu pop ups appear to tell me certain mods are working fine, and some haven't been installed correctly, but they work fine in my game the more I continued to play so it didn't bother me. Now, today I start it up and the game starts popping up those ingame menus to confirm a mod is working. And these ingame mod menus load before my main menu oddly and I'm not able to click "okay" to move on so I have to exit with the classic alt+F4, and it never reaches the main menu.

The first menu was Blackwolf Backpacks which said the mod was working fine, so I disabled the mod in my order as I didn't use it ingame yet, thinking no harm there.

Start up game again and same thing happens, but it says Selective Fire was not installed correctly and says the HUD option won't appear correctly, so I untick that from my load order.

Start game up AGAIN and the same thing happens, except this time it says Project Nevada was not installed correctly and says HUD extensions weren't detected. So I think this is extremely odd, but I untick all the PN options in my load order.

Fourth time startup it gives me the ingame menu telling me the Wasteland defense is working, thing is just like the pop ups before I'm not able to click okay to continue, so I disable it in my load order.

Fifth times the charm to no avail, start it up and it pops up another one of those menus, but to my surprise it's not a new one, it says again the PN message that the HUD extensions weren't detected and I'm not able to click okay. I go and reinstall uHUD thinking maybe if I don't include PN with it it'll work.

Sixth time, still the same message as before.

The only fix I have to get to the main menu and not have those ingame mod confirmation menus pop up is by deactivating archive invalidation, but I'm not going to play my game with a bunch of exclamation marks everywhere. Plus the Convergence mod requires PN as well. Is there a way to disable those menus from popping up as I already know.

233 plugins...

I'm not even touching this one. Delete your entire Data folder, re-install the game, and learn some restraint.

Unlike Bethesda's other Gamebryo-engine titles, New Vegas cannot support more than 139 plugins before things start randomly breaking, so you should endeavor to remain below that limit.

Don't install redundant mods; WME and WMX do the same thing and are incompatible with each other.

IWS is incompatible with the game itself.

A lot of mods you have installed use different plugins as options based on other mods. You're supposed to choose one of them, and you're loading them all.

Get creative if you have to, but trim that LO to 139 or less or there can be no troubleshooting of individual mods.

Well, like I said right before the list, I don't tick all of those on that aren't needed. WME and WMX work for the Convergence mod. IWS was working fine, from what I could tell, when I first ran the game with all these mods installed.

And again like I said, it worked fine jsut the other day, not sure what changed when I ran it again. Also a lot are armor or texture mods.

Lest you can really help me here with my problem of the ingame mod menus popping up before the main menu and me not beign able to click okay, your comment, which didn't really seem to read all of my problem, doesn't provide help.

  • 1 month later...

Actually, I'm pretty sure his comment is spot-on with regards to the problem. There does appear to be a hard cap for the number of plugins you can have on at once.

I reinstalled New Vegas recently and definitely went a bit overboard with the mods. Turning them all on caused various issues, and eventually I resorted to turning them on in batches at a time to try and find the problem.

But they all worked fine, until I reached a certain number. Then it didn't matter what I turned on, something would always pop up prior to the main menu loading.

What I have noticed is that it's very inconsistent as to what pops up before the main menu. With the exact same set of mods, I get a different message almost every time.

So it's possible that you just got lucky at first. If things break seemingly at random beyond a certain number of plugins, then possibly there's a small chance that nothing breaks.
