SgtYork2327
I just upgraded Win 8.0 to Win 8.1 (please don't scold) and now FO3 (GOTY PC on CDs ed.) won't work. Before the upgrade, FO3 & all DLCs, FWE, EWE and PB worked fine. Mouse and sound worked fine. I had actually played through twice. After the Win upgrade, FO3 would boot up very slowly and jerky as far as the menu screen, then crash when selecting continue or start a new game. I deactivated and uninstalled everything to start over. I have now reloaded basic FO3 and all DLCs, used the video card "trick", changed the .ini to iAudioCacheSize=8192, turned off ingame vsynch, and applied the latest unofficial patch. I have been able to recover only minimally. I can get the game to run, but the video and audio are verrry slow, music stutters badly, and the mouse is extremely jerky and so unstable as to be almost useless. The game is unplayable; it hasn't actually crashed, but freezes up during character selection following the birth scene. I have internet-searched these problems extensively for clues, but am now stuck. Can someone please, please pleeeeezzzzz help? Thanks !!
Purr4me
Uninstall any mods or patches, reboot. Use only default Disc data for trouble shooting, Not user made stuff, understand? No patches of any kind other than what is supplied by the companies involved when dealing with OS changes. Keeps your Witt's on tight. You really do not require any DLC's, how ever, the second DLC changes the data and the registry files components, Retail disc will install software that is very old, and very very bad for any operating system. this can not be removed by you ,it requires their software to remove it.stages are this:clean game ,falout3 only clean and updated Windows Updates Video drivers "Only" for 8.1 Do not install any other updates other than hardware drivers period, the reason why is they are Obsoleting software you need to run your games so if you do not listen, your game will never run. run fallout, establish if it runs. hard save, install cff explorer, you know it as the 4gb enabler program made by NT Core. right click the main executable and get it's ID, version ID. Download the steam version from this web site ,Not steam.(http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/4635/?) It's marked as steam. keep that in a safe place, you will need it. if the file you have on your hard drive is listed as 1.7.....patched? delete it and replace it with this one. there is a reason why and it's not important to know why. securom was a DROM DVD distrabution protection that was used many years ago and all it dis was mess up hardware and Operating systems ability to read and write CD and dvd's. bad stuff, unfortunately, it's still on the dvd second disc for fallout3's GOTY Edition. this is why you can not get your game to work, you can't prevent it installation . Just so you listed and Obey ,Do not just take My word for it, look (https://www.google.com/search?q=securom&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a) millions have posted about this "PROBLEM". other things may in fact also be involved but, these are your primary concern right now.do this and post back, I'll save the link and watch.kitty
Purr4me
I almost forgot ,DO NOT run the launcher as you now have it ,that contains the secur rom installer, you will be required to download the Bethesda patch directly from Bethesda web site to patch the steam version I gave the link to you. you better pay attention, I will not repeat this. SgtYork2327
Purr4me, thank you for the tips. After much frustration I gave up and went to bed. Checking other things today, I found the touch pad didn’t work either. I started checking devices and found mouse-touchpad-usb driver conflicts, and 2 audio driver conflicts, all which needed new 8.1 compatible drivers. Also during the night I got about 350 Mb of new windows updates (including some device patches !!!).I loaded everything and went back to try FO3 again. I have the basic game, all DLCs and FEW working properly again. I’m in the process of getting the other mods installed but at least know what I have to do. (BTW my FO3 executable is v1.7.03 and I launch from fose.loader.exe)Bottom line here is I should have known 8.1 would mess up a lot of things and not freeked out when FO3 was the first bad thing I discovered. Thanks again. Purr4me
you are not Alone in this, those that came before you have dealt with 8.1 know. not many want to or wish to relive the Windows nightmare all over again. Warning, windows 8.1 security is 4 fold, not 2 fold, there are 4 levels of trickery needed and done in a very precise manner or the system will self destruct. built in Obsolescence. Al over the world users, Companies, and cooperation bailed on windows 8.1......you have to know there must be a reason. Hewlett Packard sent back every unit they bought and instead went back to windows 7. many many stories have been told.I have attempted here to help others too. Frustration is very real. The Operating system core is dos5.0 and windows for work groups 3.1 based. on your syste. there are two files written in ## code NT based, config.nt and Autoexecute.nt if you open those in notepad ++ you will scroll through the data and be totally blown away at just how stingy MS is. any way, new blood in now in charge, heads are rolling as we speak. All the old stuff, tricks pulled to destroy that company from inside / with in, are being cleansed. I see xbox show times for TV programming is now defunct. so far, online games have not been touched, Halo TV series is going forward, but all that was planned to kill the industry, and compress the desktop world down into phone networks has been stopped. you can't make money by alienating your customers from the company. All this effects what we do, and the games we play. if by chance you feel your up to speed on system programing, find the config.ny files copy these to a flash drive and edit them on that flash drive.set stacks from 40 to 80 and save it. if you have an external sound card? use the older dos settings for the autoexect.bat in the *.nt file and save, boot into dos com only and xcopy these to the same directory you found them, overwritten the data. watch how fast that system now operates. 8.1....there are links to reconfiguring the OS in my forum signature to get you on the right path for more information about all of this. you can set up 8.1 just like 7. the widows manager is how ever forever tied into the tiles on boot. this I can not change ,risky doing too much to that system. kitty
