This is totally up to you on what to get. As far as to make a mod work, it's pretty simple.

Visit TesNexus.com and try the search engine. There are many things, weapons, armor, companions to follow you around, take your order and fight for you, mansions, homes, castles, estates, dungeons, quests, creepy stuff, Fort Death BETA (always worth taking a look into) immersion mods to make the game more realistic, such as Undercover Overhaul which will.. well.. the name kinda says it. Make you go undercover by dawning the armor or clothing of that faction.

As far as making them work, I suggest downloading Oblivion Mod Manager as it could save you a bunch of time and trouble. But until then

Go to the hard drive that the Oblivion is saved under, locate Bethesda/Oblivion/Data. This is where you drag and drop (extract) the files you just downloaded (mods) into. If it asks "Meshes" or "textures" or ANYTHING "is already blah blah, would you like to save over it?" Click yes to all. It will not overwrite it but what it will do is add files to those folders the mod is dependent on.

Open your Oblivion launcher and go to DATA, find the name of the mod you just downloaded and double click it to activate it. It is now playable.

Some mods will require OBSE, or Oblivion Script Extender, which is a very useful tool for modders to increase what the game can do. You can search for this and download it from the nexus. DO THIS FIRST! Eventually you will need to anyways so you might as well get it out of the way while it's fresh in your mind and you know what I'm talking about now rather than be stumped later. It will not damage, change, or ruin the game at all, and is extremely small in size.

I will gather a list right now of mods you might want to try using as a first timer that won't ruin the game but will actually enhance it. The mods that might make the game a little overpowered will be marked with a * in case you want to hold off on them, but before I do I will say this now.

Read extensively the Terms of Service, Agreement, Use, whatever, read em all. Read the rules too, but first off and foremost I will state the top rules you must ALWAYS abide by in the forums. Seeing as how you are new you might be unaware to them as quite a few are.

1: Never use excessive profanity, or strong vulgar language. This includes the F-bomb, S-word, any and all racial terms, explicit derogative comments of sexuality or unneeded details. Basically don't go saying "f this f that, this sucks a, piece of s, I bleeped this totally hot chick and blah". The occasional "It was so damn scary man! The Gates to Aesgaard is really good!" is acceptable, albeit still should be avoided or at least used in moderation. If you MUST curse, use the D word, and use it as an adjective, and try not to add the word it to it.

2: Do NOT call anyone names, insult anyone, use profanity at anyone, troll, flame, be rude mean demeaning or so on and so forth. This includes commenting in a modding page. Saying "this sucks" will get you into trouble. Saying "I think this mod is not really worth the effort because it failed to do as it said, or the mod description was not in tuned to what was actually there. This can definitely use improvement as example a b and c happened to me. Nice try author, I thank you for putting it up but it doesn't fit my taste" is not only acceptable but should be the only way to downsize a mod in its comments. Basically, be polite at all times, even when it's hard to.

3: NO PIRACY! Don't even talk about it lol. At all!

That's pretty much all you really need to keep in mind your first time here. I'm not a moderator nor do I pretend to be, just adding to this letter of "welcome, heres your help" As well, if you see anyone doing anything that shouldn't be done or have questions feel free to PM a moderator. A list of their names are on a link at the bottom of thenexusforums home page.

List of mods for good mods to use to start out with:

1: Undercover Overhaul

2: Organized Potions

3: Faster Spells

Yes, the first 3 are actually my mods, but they were made specifically to right the wrongs in the game itself and you will find them immensely helpful starting out.

4: Elsweyr the Deserts of Anequina

5: Alternative Start Arrive by Ship

6: Oblivion mod manager

7: Natural Environments

8: Unofficial Oblivion Patch

9: Deadly Reflex*

10: Oblivion Stutter Remove

11: Thieves Arsenal*

12: Adonnays Elven Weaponry

13: GATES TO AESGAARD - Episode One*

14: Cobl

You can find these by simply looking up their names in TesNexus.com

Mostly I just skimmed the top 100 and top 25 recent for ones to suite your needs. I have not had nearly enough coffee to truly think of ones off that list that will help you, but hey, they got to top 100 for a reason.

I welcome you to this family of sites and wonderful community! I hope this has helped you. If this has helped you in any way feel free to click the + button next to my name to give me a Kudos should you feel I deserve it, or click the link in my signature, if not, then feel free to ignore these last 2 lines.

I have a set of help files for people who are not computer geeks and are new to mods. They include downloading, extracting (unzipping) installing and activating mods. I have included a simple mod to practice on and instructions for installing and using 7-zip. If you are interested, click on the highlighted link below to be taken to the site where they are kept. I recommend starting with #1 and working your way through them.

If you use them I would appreciate some feedback as to what needs improvement and what works for you.
