Game won't start with SKSE loader

Hello everyone!

Woe is me for I have a problem with the SKSE loader: it doesn't want to start (it has worked in the past - 30 minutes ago).

Computer: It's a desktop HP Compaq 8200 Elite MT PC with Intel Core i7-2600 CPU (3,40 GHz) and 8 GB of RAM. 64-bit. The graphics card is AMD Radeon HD 7700 series. Only 26 GB out of 456 GB free on my C drive; the other drives have next to no space. I am the only user and administrator on this computer.

Game: Located in the usual place (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim). Current version is 1.9.32.0, I think (moused over TESV.exe in the Skyrim folder). I have all the DLCs (Dawnguard, Dragonborn, Hearthfire and the free "High res texture pack" that Steam offers). I am using SKSE (obviously), version 1.07.01. I am also using FNIS (Fores New Idles I believe) 5.1.1 and SkyUI (no idea which version, but it's old at least 1 if not 2 years). As of 1 hour ago I also have BOSS installed. BOSS log (pls no judgerino), which hopefully also shows the load order:

These plugins are recognised by BOSS and have been sorted according to its masterlist. Please read any attached messages and act on any that require action.

My game has been working perfectly with no new mods installed for almost a week. Then I entered the alchemist shop in Markarth, received a blue screen and ever since the SKSE version of the game won't start. The screen goes black as normal, but before it gets to the Bethesda logo it gives me the "Skyrim has stopped working" error and closes the whole thing. The non-SKSE version of the game starts normally, but the last autosave (inside the alchemist shop) takes forever to load and the game stops responding. Older saves still work.

I have tried many things, including:

-restarting my computer

-deleting the apparently corrupted autosave

-deleting the mods that BOSS said should be deleted for whatever reason

-reinstalling SKSE with the installer

-manually reinstalling SKSE

-deleting the SKSE folder from the Documents\My Games\Skyrim folder (suggestion found on Google)

-running SKSE as administrator

-running SKSE from the source folder

-running SKSE a thousand times and hoping it would magically work

-verifying the game cache (1 file failed to verify)

-deleting the .ini files in the Documents\My Games\Skyrim folder

-disabling all mods in case any of them are causing the crash (I take it this means the mods aren't the cause of this)

Right now I am in the middle of reinstalling the whole damn thing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First thing,

Don't use BOSS, use Loot. Loot is made by same Authors and its developed to actually function pretty much how BOSS does without having to maintain a BOSS Library by actually looking at the mod in some way.

I have like 190 plugins and across 2 characters up top level 40 not once had to move an esp myself.

2nd Thing,

If you've been playing with the same setup for 2 weeks and only just suddenly had an issue, without having installed mods, w/o having installed updates (Hey I have a saying if it isn't broken don't update it)

Alright so here's whats possible,

1) Most likely you've been trucking along and things seemed fine but as more script mods started to finally activate during the course of play your script lag reached critical and crashed your game. Fixable

2) As you were playing the number of orphan scripts built up did the same as above. This could mean bad mod or too heavy script load. This is fixable.

3) Your computer could be in trouble, you mentioned "Blue Screen" the color blue and computer are never a good sign, usually this is accompanied by freeze, ctd, total computer lock up and it doesn't get better or go away on its own.

Fix for 1 and 2

Basically its time to optimize your game,

SMME

ENB Booster

Skyrim Configulator (try threading options, not garunteed and can make your game worse, it is known to work with I5 processors)

Ordinator Textures

One Tweak

Look around for papyrus tweaks, I don't put faith in this most tweaks come at a cost of performance somewhere else like frame rates >< but the upside is your scripts will function better.

Making changes to SKSE.ini

[GENERAL]

clearinvalidregistrations=1

(kills off orphan scripts via skse)

Please note that these will help but isn't a license to just go crazy, use some restraint and be aware are you trying to play an action game or a pretty game, what kind of game is it that you want is the most important thing about modding. I try to really focus in on that when I play and make choices carefully on that mods that don't enhance what I want to have happen to the core idea in mind get cut out...

So its like this if Im playing a vampire, Frostfall gets cut. Playing a Seccubus, doesn't make sense to also have a Needs mod in there.

Going for a Full on needs play through I toss all the vamp/were whatever stuff out

Going for a screenshot focus playthrough, I toss all combat overhauls all needs stuff goes, and set game for easy and get my print screen button ready.

As to your computer,

Might want to do maintance on it,

Defrag the Drive overnight,

Double check your updates,

Run some virus scans

Make sure you have a backup around,

Make sure you got a restore option, where's your copy of Windows, might need that soon.

Check you video driver and see if changing that out helps, sometimes those get downloaded wrong

Those are just some things you can do to prevent

If you've already reinstalled the game

Its time to consider again which Mod Handler your going to use for gaming,

NMM, is really for beginners and it doesn't handle huge amounts of mods very well, it has severe limitations for handling the kind of lists that I often see gamers bringing to bear here in the troubleshooting section.

Honest, you need to strongly consider making a switch to a better platform to suit your gaming needs.

Mod Organizer,

Keeps your mods in separate virtual folders. This means that when a mod is installed it doesn't overwrite the main game folder and it doesn't overwrite another mod. It goes into its own folder.

-Your game folder stays "virgin"

-Your Mods keep their hands to themselves

How it handles Load orders and Conflict Overwrites

-There are 2 window planes

-Left window plane determines how mod information actually is supposed to Overwrite prior mods, it even gives you a list of what has been overwritten and signs that it has overwritten something, it could just be a mesh or texture but what you want to know is it overwriting a script, NMM never lets you do this.

-If you don't like how it overwrites you change it by dragging around the order of the mods overwrite folders, to do that in NMM you have to entirely uninstall the mods and carefully install them in the order you want.

-With MO you still get load order by ESP just like NMM

Now lets say you want to entirely disable a mod for testing purposes,

-With MO you just uncheck the mod in left plane, its still installed into its virtual folder and since its separated into its folder you don't wait for an uninstall. Thing is the mod wont load cause MO wont tell the game about it cause its unchecked and it wont be in the virtual list that is built for loading by MO.

-With NMM you get the joy of having to uninstall the mod, double check the integrity of your game folder, and you have to check and make sure that vital files needed by other mods you installed were not inadvertently removed during this process, meaning that uninstalling a mod in NMM can have extreme far reaching consequences to the entirety of your game.

Example,

You uninstall a Follower mod that made a change to the Follower.Script, NMM see's that it needs to remove Follower.Script to entirely remove that mod, BUT follower.script was installed by SKSE.

Without knowing it at some point in the future you cannot hire a follower because this vital script was removed during the uninstallation of your follower mod....

Have fun trying to solve that.

Thank you for the advice and help, gamefever.

Though I don't understand what any of the fixes you suggested do (I'm bad at things like these), I'll give them a go and see if they work. Since I'll be starting fresh (obviously I made backups of my saves and mods etc), I'll also try to reduce the number of modd. I've never used NMM because I find copypasting files from one folder into another to be easy enough even for me. Since that meant overriding some game files I've always made a backup of them in the mod's original folder. This Mod Organizer you've mentioned sounds brilliant. I'll definitely use that, thanks!! As for the computer fixes; I dearly hope this isn't an even larger issue and that they won't be necessary.

I'm still 30 minutes away from reinstalling the game (I have no almost no internet speed) but I'll post later to update the situation.

There was a way to reinstall skyrim extremely quickly I cant remember all the steps but,

It involved copying the Skyrim ESM's you know the really big files,

Then what I did was delete everything manually and place a copy of ESM's back into the folder

After that I would just verify the cache in Steam,

Cut down on reinstall for me by several hours. I think it takes like 10 minutes after that.

I've just finished reinstalling and redownloading mods. That Mod Organizer is incredible! The SKSE game works now, the mods aren't tampering with the original game files, I have multiple mod profiles so I don't use every single mod on every single character, so there should be a smaller chance of overloading the game. I've even found new mods for the water.

Thank you again gamefever, without your help this would have just repeated itself after a couple of weeks or months, now my game should be a lot more stable. Plus the mods are ridiculously easy to install and manage now. Thanks!
