CompanyOfGamers
I am a non-veteran Skyrim player and I do not know if I should play Skyrim more. Because, Skyrim is so dark and gloomy game. Nobody is innocent even children (I mean Honorhall Orphanage Mission). The old woman are bad I know but, when I kill her, I have seen children are dancing, it is disgusting. Everybody looks like evil, no exception. What kinda world is it? Most of clans are bounded to a daedric prince. Werewolves and the Companions is bounded to Hircine, Volikhar Clan is bounded to Molag Bal, Thieves' Guild is bounded to Noctural, the Coven of Namira is bounded to Namira, there is a Daedric Statue in College of Winterhold's Garden. There is no clan which is bounded to an Aedra. There is no Aedric Artifacts or Aedric Clans which is joinable such as Viglant of Stendarr or Temple of Mara. There are "Pickpocketing" or "Lockpicking" perk trees but, there aren't "Being Hero", "Mining" or "Cooking" perk trees. There aren't any good transformation just "Vampire Lord" or "Werewolf". Why there isn't "Mermaid" or good human transformations? If I did like crime games, I would play "Grand Theft Auto". You can't delete daedric or clan quests from your quest line and I hate see unfinished quests in my quest line. In the game I can only work for two daedra who are Meridia and Azura. Because, they are not completely evil daedric princes. The Game forces you to do bad things. Maybe, I will try Oblivion, it looks like much better. What do you think? Is Oblivion as gloomy and dark as Skyrim or not? I don't like original graphics of Oblivion but; there are really good graphic patchs for it. Can you recommend me some graphic mods for Oblivion. And, I want you to offer me unofficial DLCs which repair most of bugs in the game. Skyrim's graphics are the best but; I hate its theme, so dark and pesimistic. Imperial City looks more peaceful place I think. Would you offer Oblivion instead of Skyrim for me? In addition to this, I am stranger for Elder Scrolls Universe so I had lost in Skyrim, I need a guide for that so, I think Oblivion is the best choice for this. Has Oblivion got two expansions, right? Do you recommend both of them? For example, Skyrim has got three DLCs but nobody likes Heartfire much (except me). Do I need expansions to use Graphic Patch or can I use with just Oblivion? Thanks for everything. Edited July 23, 2014 by CompanyOfGamers
CompanyOfGamers
I am sorry to behave against flood rule but; aren't there anybody to answer my questions?
Maskar
It seems mostly personal opinion, but I prefer Oblivion over Skyrim. Oblivion is indeed more colorful and has powerful modding capabilities (thanks to OBSE). The Shivering Isles expansion is very well done too. You're probably going to need a few mods to make it more suitable for your needs (possibly a mod to improve player leveling, UI and level scaling). I myself am not bothered by Oblivion's default graphics but there are several mods to improve this.
Inafog
I have not yet played Skyrim. (I was planning to, but having read your post I may not.) But I have played Oblivion and I can say that it seems much easier to be 'good' in Cyrodiil than in Skyrim's province. My characters in RPGs are always basically sane, moral people who do not do evil (although a bit of petty larceny is not out of the question). If you do not join the Dark Brotherhood (and maybe the Thieves Guild) you should not have too many qualms, except for about half of the Daedra Lord quests (which I did not do). And you can of course set your own goals, such as book collecting or exploring. (But it is necessary to accept the fact that almost all the people you meet in ruins, dungeons, etc. will try to kill you, so you pretty much must fight back if you don't want to run away. Invisibility can help avoid unpleasantness. My character, a Wood Elf archer, closed many Oblivion gates without a fight by careful use of a 12-second invisibility spell.) I am not good at modding and am still trying to figure out the mods I want to use, so others are better at advising you there. Be sure to get the Official and Unofficial Patches. You will want to install both Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles (and the patches for the latter). I recommend a small house, too, as a place to store things and call your own. I used Maigrets "Maple Leaf Cottage" and was very satisfied. (It also comes with a good horse and two dogs who are quite fierce fighters, although you can also just leave them at the cottage.) Do try Oblivion. It is not a gloomy world, unless you go looking for gloom.
CompanyOfGamers
Thank you very much to give me your opinions and make me more learned about Oblivion game. It would be much better if there was more people who had joined us. Edited July 25, 2014 by CompanyOfGamers
zetenrisiel
Hey CoG, Since you have mentioned your frustrations in a couple of threads it must be troubling you, but keep in mind that Oblivion is almost 10 years old, so there may not be a lively discussion scene anymore. Skyrim can be played from a good standpoint, but it is much harder to be against killing people when everyone outside the cities is intent on attacking you. My suggestion is to try something in the illusion school, it will help you avoid combat. That being said, illusion is much more useful in Oblivion, as uou can get a wider variety of spells even at an early level. I think of Oblivion as a shiny veneer over some really dark stuff, if you read between the lines a bit. To your want of a mermaid transformation, there is a very well-made mod that can give you that. Since there is a large body of water running through the middle of the world it won't stifle your gameplay much like it would in Skyrim. As far as the dark brotherhood and forced evil quests, they are present in Oblivion as well. If you accidentally kill someone in Oblivion you are automatically signed up to be in the Dark Brotherhood. Ny suggestion in either game is to work on your roleplaying justifications. These types of games arent that great at telling you the story you want to see, but they are fantastic platforms for creating your own Story where, just like real life, your choices aren't always easy and sometimes the only options are bad ones. It takes a little work and imagination since the games arent perfect but it can be a lot of fun.
Inafog
But note that, although even an accidental killing will get you invited to join the Dark B., you do not have to join it. You can ignore the messenger, and you'll never see him again.
baal1980
Hello, I have never played Oblivion before Skyrim (bought Skyrim on release). After Skyrim released, I played it a lot - up till now I've dumped around 600 hours on it. But IMO - for Skyrim to be enjoyable you really have to mod the crap out of it. What I found quite frustrating was that the game was getting more and more unstable and quite bad performance-wise. Of course I applied all known performance and stability guides, patches and other stuff but between using over 100 mods on top of an ENB, gameplay felt really sluggish (and I don't play on a potato), with the game loading screens taking up to a minute. With frequent crashes it just felt like a chore... I have decided to try Oblivion which GOTY I bought some time ago on a Steam sale. And I'm having a blast with it! Even heavily modded it's very responsive, stable and looks beautiful. It is definitely more on the 'light and colourful' side of fantasy as well (especially the fantastic Shivering Isles expansion) but that's great - personally I like it's bit of a tongue-in-cheek attitude :) TL;DR Oblivion is not a game everyone is going to like (the setting, difficulty, graphics) but I am having a great time in Cyrodiil. Give it a chance, it can't hurt. You can always get back to Skyrim if you don't like it :)
zwkdiv
If you prefer a "Good" character then the Knights of the Nine DLC for Oblivion should really suit you. In this DLC you take on the role of a "Questing" Knight involved in a Crusade, a quest of light versus dark.
CompanyOfGamers
@zwkdiv Thank you for your help. What about "Shivering Isles", does it work for me?
